Yeah a lot of tear-jerking and "my dead mother left me her recipes" and "I sacrifice so much for my kids" but I mean that's all [the early rounds of] American Idol is too. It's really the exact same show but with cooking instead of singing.
The contestants even do the same thing when getting the apron as the singers do when getting the yellow ticket to Hollywood (hiding under their hats, behind their backs, etc.).

I dunno, there's already too many cooking shows where we get informative tips and education (Top Chef, Next Food Network Star, even Ramsay shows like Hell's Kitchen and Kitchen Nightmares and The F Word) -- this show isn't about teaching you how to cook, it's about that manufactured operatic contest of taking hundreds of amateur hopefuls and narrowing down to one lottery-type winner.
