The Leftovers - Season 3 The Leftovers - Season 3

They def went a bit overboard with the writing of all aussies being ocker, but it's funny none the less.

Am I a horrible person for cracking up laughing when Kevin looked back at his phone at it wasn't Evie, the expression on the person's face in the picture was hilarious to me.

Yes I am curious about all of this too. So what is the "right" answer, if there is one? Is that all part of the hustle/scam?

Also, does Nora really want to do the radiation and her investigation just cover so Kevin doesn’t stop her?

At least part of her wants to go through with it hoping to join her family, yes. That's why she was so angry.

I'm good with the weirdness. I loved the argument scene where I was laughing out loud and in shock from line to line. Fantastic.

Roll on next week

I cracked when the phonelady said "if you see him, tell him we said hello, and that Finland won the World Cup". What are the odds that the writers choose that out of all the unlikely things to happen. (I assume she was talking sarcastically about football World Cup, which Finland has never even qualified for and its kind of a joke of how bad finnish national football squad is.)

if they're connected to the baby test thing, it'd be weird to go through the whole thing if they know they're going to reject her anyway (only on tv!), but yeah, seemed like they might have thought she was lying.

was thinking that maybe their thing is a scam in the sense that it isn't real, at all. like they're the next gen GR, target miserable ppl who have lost, and just mess with them. they drove Nora about as nuts as the dude who torched himself, by giving the opposite answer (perhaps indicating it didn't matter).

but i don't even think i believe that ^ tbh. sure a few ppl would go nuts and kill themselves or something, but Nora said that every one of the 100+ ppl who "went through" vanished? seems pretty unlikely, sadly.

I think the show has wanted its audience to ask itself that question since the second episode, but her reaction to being rejected definitely indicates that at least some non-insignificant part of her wants to be blasted by that thing, and has wanted that all along.

I wouldn't be terribly surprised if that's basically the last we heard about the machine and those scientists. I mean, with the ep1 flash forward, we know Nora doesn't ultimately go through. Maybe she tracks them down and gets a few more details, but I don't think it'll be a major part of the end game.

At any rate, it's a cool call-back to Nora paying the prostitute to shoot her in season 1 (?).

This is almost definitely true. The machine was a macguffin to get Nora and Kevin to Australia, nothing more. Also it's about +400 Nora and Kevin ever see each other again.

Not my favorite episode but I think it could end up being an important one; eager to see where we go these last 4 weeks.

I don't think it was obvious as a viewer that Nora was lying when she answered she would kill the baby so ya they're prob scam artists. Or they decline ppl to make them want it way more then contact them again later to go through with it.

Strongly agree.

Though I'd be happy if every remaining episode's opening was the Perfect Strangers theme.

Lolol, this. I seem to recall Finland being mentioned in "Lost" once, as well. Wonder what connection Lindelof has to our country or if he just likes to joke about us for some reason

Yeah I haven't been a big fan of this either, although the Perfect Strangers one was epic. I really liked the Max Richter theme song of season 1, and while the s2 theme song was super weird I still thought it was spot on awesome. But the changing theme that always spoils the future episode... meh. I get what they're trying to do but I just don't think it's a great idea, feels like they're sort of turning it into a joke which I don't really appreciate. I guess I'm oldschool in the sense that I want the theme song to follow the overall mood of the show and help tune you in.

I've also gotten a little bit distracted about their use of music in some scenes this season. It's a little polarizing because the use of music is also one of the most epic things about this show, hands down (a prime example would be the use of that piece of Verdi opera in "International Assassin", which he wrote shortly after the death of his wife and kids iirc). In the latest episode, I was a little distracted by using "Take on me" in the scene where Nora descended to that cardboard box, it just didn't fit imo. I do appreciate using the song in general in this ep though, I hadn't seen the original music video in ages and it's still epic and deserves to be used in the show for the video alone.

Overall I think e4 was my favorite this season. It had the perfect amount of everything. I lived like two blocks from where some of the Melbourne scenes were shot as well, it was pretty cool as well to see my old building in the background.

Well, even if we never see or hear about it again, it was a little more than that.

The radiation machine is sort of to Nora what the GR was to Kevin. It's the wish fulfillment they've struggled with throughout the series projected onto some kind of nefarious group. Their first instinct is to discredit said group so as to sort of slay their own demons, but there's always a part of them under the surface that wonders if they're onto something. Kevin has always had one foot out the door on whatever family he's currently a part of, and the GR's whole thing is "there is no family" - that's always been at the heart of his battles with Patti (both the alive and dead versions) and it was reiterated again in this past episode with his visions of Evie. Nora can't get past the Departure of her children, no matter how hard she tries, it's always there in the back of her mind, the guilt, the grief - any chance of being reunited with them, no matter how small, is sort of her ultimate fantasy. It's like, if she knew the machine was real, she would "go through", but if she could categorically expose this group and this machine as fake, she could destroy the fantasy.

We already knew Nora was taking steps back this season before she even heard about this machine - losing Lily, the Wu-tang tattoo incident. Now the radiation machine, not to mention her boyfriend being treated by her brother as some kind of messiah. All told, it was enough to basically reset her entire grieving process. She's back to square one.

It just occurred to me that Nora almost surely got pregnant in the airport bathroom.

I'm not seeing this. My sense is that it doesn't matter what answer you give to the baby question, the scientists will reject you. It's part of the test to see if you will give up. (Guy who set himself on fire gave up, obviously.) I still think the series ends with someone (Kevin?) getting zapped.

This show is definitely making a pretty good argument for religious belief being indistinguishable from insanity. Matt even states something to that effect in the book of Kevin.

also not familiar, but Sepinwall had a blurb about her. guess she's been making the rounds, not at all surprised this show was able to fill out the ranks with elite supersubs in S3:

casting on this show has been fairly great. only ppl i really knew coming in were Amy Brenneman & Liv Tyler (even though Justin Theroux has apparently been around forever, and Christopher Eccleston was a Dr. Who), and Regina King was a nice hired gun for S2. but Carrie **** & Ann Dowd were breakout stars, and Paterson Joseph (Holy Wayne) was incredibly compelling in his limited screen time. most of the other small parts were also well done, stunt casting like Mark Linn-Baker well executed too.

really sad this show won't run for like 6 seasons tbh
