What would your guess be for real life cults and how they are funded?

Barring extra information (that they tap dance around Patti maybe/maybe not having) that is a wise course of action. Dressing in white and smoking is dumb, not enlightened.

I caught zero logic when she started quoting that poetry-sounding gibberish and couldn't tell if Kevin was supposed to have recognized something she said or not. As a viewer I started zoning out so the reasons for why he seemed interested in what she was saying were lost on me.

Show could literally riff on anything, on any level of metaphysical, spiritual, or human condition theorizing they want, and they go with something that is not intellectually challenging at all while hoping the whiff of mystery keeps people intrigued.

Why do you think the crazy things that the clearly crazy cult lady was saying is supposed to make sense?

Odds on getting an explanation of holy Wayne's magic hugs?

The Wayne sub-plot is the only part of the show so far that I do not care one bit about. Although the multi Asian reveal last week did tickle my fancy a bit.

What exactly were they implying with the chief finding his shirts in the woods? Obviously that he had been there before I assume, but why? To set up a camp of some sort to eventually bring out the leader of the GR and kill her? Its fine if we're not supposed to know yet but I'm not sure about it.

If the woman knew she was going to be stoned to death and was "fine with it", why was she begging them to stop?

Probably because the reality of being stoned to death was much worse than it was in theory when she agree to it.

Huh, the character founding a cult based on impregnating Asian teenage girls was the only character I found myself really identifying with. Everyone else, I have no idea what they're thinking. Holy Wayne I get.

The explanation is that he is a scam artist and people believe his hugs heal them because they want to.

The most emotional scene for me so far was when Nora asked Wayne if she'd ever see her family again and the way he answered her so bluntly and her reaction... So I think you're right that what he says works because people want it. It might also help that he says what everyone else is too afraid to say to them.

Holy Wayne never met any major character in the book except Kevin (the son of whoever the lead guy is), so I find it fascinating that they have somehow connected these two characters. Everything you guys like about this show is brand new to it. Sounds to me like Lindelof is doing a hell of a job with this show.

Hank, there's a book out, be careful about what odds you lay even though this thing appears to be as much of an adaptation as Under the Dome (meaning almost none other than name and character names and maybe broad brush stroke backstories).

My gut tells me that Lindelof decided to try to fill in the three years between the event and the book starting. If it's still starting three years later, then it's a pretty big wtf.

I don't think the point of the shirts was to imply anything, as much as confirm that Garvey has been bat **** crazy for a little while.

I'd definitely be in the camp that holy Wayne's hugs are magic. I hope he is not a fraud as having a pain absorber makes him more interesting.
Spoiler:
Nunnehi's post warning about there being a book seems pretty spoilers though confirming the fraud thesis

I think the people hating on this show are having a hard time getting over how slow of a start it got off to.

The last 3 episodes have all been good. This episode might have been one of my favorites of any show in 2014. Whoever directed it gets an A+ for me to. IooIt was pretty awesome'

Though I did think GR leader's soliloquy in the beginning of the last scene missed the mark a touch. (I didn't think it was bad necessarily, just could have been less cheesy/melodramatic).

I was completely apathetic about the show early in the season, but it's won me over.

Regarding Savant's spoiler

Spoiler:
No, that is not what I was implying. I can't go further than that without treading the idea of a spoiler. I don't think you can realistically use the book as a guide for anything in this show, but I was warning hank to not lay odds, since there is a book and people could find out what the deal is, or not. Knowing what Lindelof's own personal belief system is would be a better way to "lay odds", in my opinion.
