Jeopardy 9/10

She lost by like $100 or something.

(Actual numbers unknown)
Champ 8,000
Girl 6,000
Guy 12,000

Champ wagered 4,100 and Guy wagered basically all and got it wrong.
I think you're mixing up another game, Tim's win vs Allison went down like:

champ 8800
Allison 4200
dude 11000

Champ bet 300 and got it wrong, Allison doubled up and guy that was in the lead covered champ's double up and missed.

Tim's story from Wed was about MtG, if that wasn't obvious. He used to write regularly for a magic strategy site, he was always hilarious, one of my favorites.

Last night was terrible. Lots of wrong answers and triple stumpers and what seemed like easy stuff.

Thx for the Tuesday update.

This champ has like 9 lives. I guess I really helps to know how to wager in final jeopardy.

Kinda of weird watching tonight knowing

Spoiler:
Cindy has passed away. Expect that when she loses, Alex will give a recorded piece during the show close. Glad she got to check a big box in life-not only being the show, but becoming a champion. Was worried that not going all-in was going to cost her first going into FJ.

Nice to see her not only put up a good showing but beat a seven-time champ. You go down in Jeopardy history when you beat a super champ.

And I don't think we need to put this in spoilers. It was linked earlier, but I think we should just have it out there for anyone who doesn't click on links or spoilers. Tuesday's champion died last week. The producers knew she had terminal cancer when they put her on the show, escalating her priority due to her condition. An alternate who was there for the taping said on JBoard that she was doubled over in pain off camera. She donated all winnings to cancer research.

Sheepish grin. Missed that amongst the Allison posts.

good topic in general and didn't realize that about the young lady who won last night... probably be crying watching tonight.

as per strategy,

in general people are way too conservative on daily doubles. i think people put negative real world value on ending up with a poor score or - heaven forbid - a negative score at the end.......... i think trebek has something to do with it. he gave that roger guy grief on the champs tourney for i think going all-in twice and failing but i think it was the correct decision. after all, you are trying to win NOT end up with respectable total.

"price is right" contestant have got much smarter and more aggressive about proper strategy. maybe same happens in J but it's alot more complex.

as per final jeopardy, a few thoughts:

i find the better the category for me the harder the question. i don't do that well on business of which i know alot. and the opposite is true, i have got many FJ's on subjects i thought i knew almost nothing. i knew more than i thought - mostly from having watched J for years.

you can't assume that leader bets so that he/she wins for certain if they get it right. many many times they don't.

if you are in last place and can win without increasing your $$$$ then you definitely want to think of this. here's the logic:

if the question is easy, you have no hope of winning.

if the question is hard, likely both above you strike out as do you and if the 2 above players bet aggressively you win. there are many times though where you'd have to increase your $$$$ AND have both players miss. but often you don't need that.

i'd have to look at the probabilities, but all 3 being right or all 3 being wrong are both very common

here's the approx "back of envelope" FJ outcomes..... won't add up to 100% cause of my eyeball estimation/rounding and some RW complexity.

all contestants correct: 15%

all contestants wrong: 22%

2 contestant correct (3 made to final): 30%

2 contestants wrong (3 made to final): 35%

so hardish question is 57% vs. 45% for easyish question.

would be so VALUABLE to know how hard the question will be and they seem to mix it up alot.

River, cool detail -- after that Ultimate TOC final aired, Roger came in this thread and posted that he was a reader back when he developed his wagering strategy.

Four-time champ. She probably would have made the ToC.

Here in Minneapolis, local channel came back from last commercial break, and then gave us a silent black screen until local news started at top of the hour. We never saw/heard FJ.

Bite me, KARE-11.

Awesome comeback today, from in the red to start DJ to winning handily.

I figured with the story, she would be on one show, maybe win once. Very impressive. Betting has been solid. Does a good job of clue deciphering. Seen her on geography problems visually recall maps in her head.

Hoping J! kicked in some $$ to go along with her donation (including the $10K for being in ToC).

Loved the come from behind win from her today.
They had like 7 clues left in double though, and I think the 2nd DD.

She's a superchamp, and one who defeated another superchamp! Very rare.

Julia's wager on the DD at the end of the game yesterday was terrible. She had a chance to turn the game into a runaway while still maintaining a lead if she got the clue wrong, but made some pointless small wager instead.

Damn, tough way for it to end. She would have won if she had not added the "g" at the end of the word in that stupid rhymin' simon category.

Surprised there hasn't been more talk about Cindy in this thread. What an amazing story!

I didn't see all of her games; just a couple. I was surprised how quiet she was during Double Jeopardy in her last game. Maybe they just weren't her categories. She still came close to winning, thanks in part to Sam auto-betting $1,000 on each of the Daily Doubles in Double Jeopardy. I'd be interested to see an analysis of the proper bets in those situations. It seemed like not much thought went into those wagers.

Everyone nailed Final Jeopardy. I had no idea. I was grasping at straws in Central America. Haha.

Same. I half heartedly guessed Aruba, but I haven't traveled to the Caribbean at all. Sam seems like a tool.

RIP Cindy. Her run should be up there with Ken, Rutter etc. Winning 6 times on cancer treating meds and pain killers, low on energy, etc. Insanely impressive. And she was so quiet and calm the whole time. A true joy to watch.
