im snap taking this situation if im a sitcom writer. it's not like their creativity is stifled or anything, they're just steering it towards an emo bridge and gettting tons of cash.

This is really illogical. A show only sucks if people think it sucks. If the public doesn't think it sucks, it doesn't suck.

Obviously they are in a great position, nothing wrong with being ****ty at your job and making tons of money!

Well the problem is that people are very very forgiving to things they already like. Once something is "good", it's very hard for it to get "bad" in a typical person's head. Because liking things is fun.
Combine that with the fact that people generally are very easily pleased when it comes to TV and I think a simple statement as "if people like it it doesn't suck" is wrong.

Re: How I Met Your Mother Season 7
even my parents (who watch DWTS and 2.5 men and NCIS other standard cross cultural american tv) have given up on HIMYM. yet somehow i havent =(
my point is that even though they may be in the minority, they represent typical tv watchers imo...and they saw a quality drop off and acted accordingly.

Re: How I Met Your Mother Season 7
I have seen this show, every episode weekly, since episode 3 of season 1. The show was amazing but as soon as the characters started changing, it really dropped off. Barney is now different, Robin is different, Marshall is different, and Lily and Ted can't carry this show by themselves. I know it revolves around Ted, but he's the more neutral character and needs the strong personalities of the others for it to be a good show.
I don't understand why writers of a hit show with great success start to change their characters when their ratings are amazing. If it isn't broken and people are enjoying it, don't fix or change it! Just keep putting the same characters in more interesting situations.
This whole move to an emotional show was something that I remember happening with Friends and it just always seems so out of place because...it's a DAMN COMEDY!

this is at least the 10th time I've talked about this:
How I Met Your Mother, from the very first episode, it's been a comedy show that is a drama. Other examples: Friends, Frasier
The show you are talking about watching falls into this category:
A comedy that is a comedy, with a little drama added in, but it's a comedy.
Examples: Seinfeld, Two and a Half Men, The Big Bang Theory
Seinfeld and George and Charlie and Leonard have had girlfriends and relationships, but they aren't the core of the show, they are just plot devices.
How I Met Your Mother is named HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER. It's a Lifetime movie of Ted's life and loves. At it's core, HIMYM is a girly feeling show, with Barney around for comedy, where as The Big Bang Theory is a comedy with Penny around for boobs.

Re: How I Met Your Mother Season 7
Two more seasons blows my mind. I just found out ratings highest ever from reading this thread. I agree with many here than this was the worst season ever, and it was a struggle to get through episodes even as a huge indoctrinated fan.

it was a cool story with a neat little hook (narrator looking back, from future, to hijinx of current time) that would have made for a great story if they wrapped it up in a timely manner (four seasons, imo). instead, they found themselves with a big hit and no more meaningful story to tell. they went for the cash grab and started turning out crap.

I wish more American shows could just wrap things up in a timely manner like the Brits.

Interesting way of comparing the shows. I see this as well but I feel that it is possible to have a show like HIMYM where the general idea is a girly/Lifetime type of idea but it is simply used as a tool to move the comedy along. I feel the number of laughs per episode is the main determination if it is a comedy or a drama.
I feel that the episode storylines are still centering around comedy as the main drive for the show (more so in the beginning seasons.) I feel that Friends did the EXACT same thing as HIMYM as well as Frasier (to a lesser degree.) I feel Marshall and Lilly having a baby/moving away was like Chandler and Monica making their relationship public and more serious (and then having and baby and moving away but that was in the very LAST season) and the same was that Niles and Daphny became a couple. It destroys those characters and changes them ENTIRELY! There is a reason that Bart Simpson didn't age over the first 10 years of the show, they didn't want to change the character.

I think British comedy has its moments but overall, American comedy is more advanced as of 2012. If you look around the world, there are more prominent and popular American shows made global than British shows.
Also, comedy is a business in the US so it if you have a Seinfeld, a Friends, or a 2 1/2 Men, on your hands, you milk it till it is still profitable (meaning sponsors still paying more for ads than cost of show production.)

Re: How I Met Your Mother Season 7
Seems much less likely than just another in a long line of twists.
While the thread has been bumped, though - did anyone else see those stories about the actress who plays Nora a few weeks ago? According to an apparently well respected journalist she was selected as Tom Cruise's girlfriend pre-Katie Holmes then was dumped and sent to crazy scientology punishment camp after she asked the leader of the Church to speak louder or something ridiculous. Sort of an amazing story, with no denial from her that I saw.
