Re: The HBO series "Oz"
I'm not a fan of the wire myself. I see that it's very well made, and it's clearly very good, but it's just not for me i guess. I couldn't sit through two episodes.

Re: The HBO series "Oz"
I'm in the middle of my 2nd Wire marathon and it's better the 2nd time.
I couldn't get into Oz, though I might try again. Hard to do when I watched The Wire first. I had a choice between the 2 when I was looking for a new show. I chose......wisely.

Jefferson Keane is executed halfway through the first season because the actor portraying him, Leon, refused to commit to a series. When Leon asked Tom Fontana why he was being killed off, Fontana told him it was because he said he wouldn't commit to more than four episodes. Leon replied that he thought he'd been talked out of that and actually wanted to stay.

I thought about the Wire, but I heard a lot of mixed reviews on it and it supposedly can be pretty slow, so I've decided on "Oz" after I saw a lot of good reviews for it on Netflix.
I'm almost done watching the first episode, and so far it looks very interesting. Like the Sopranos, there are tons of intimidating characters that draw me to the series for one reason or another. The storyline seems good so far as well, and I've always been curious how prison life is.
So for people who have followed this show, what do you think of it?

**** oz, watch the Wire next
i loved Oz, but it's not even the same category as the Wire
it might be a little slow to people that can't appreciate it, but it's really the perfect tv show from start to finish.
cliff notes: watch the wire

Nothing beat Six Feet Under imo. I'm on Season 4 of The Wire right now and it's quite good but not amazing.

Re: The HBO series "Oz"
Lol, weird to see this bumped.
I've already watched every episode of the Wire a while ago and it's definitely the greatest TV series of all time. Got into Dexter too and love that show as well.
I've seen 4 seasons of Oz and enjoyed it, but I don't know if I want to finish the series. I've heard it's not nearly as good as the previous seasons, and my favorite character on the show was killed off in the middle of the fourth season.
Should I finish it or not, OOT?

Re: The HBO series "Oz"
The guy who helped out with making OZ seems like a super cool dude. He also helped start High Times magazine....Read about him, his name is Richard Stratton.
He was a crazy hash dealer that would ship in containers full of hash into USA from the middle east. The guy seems like a cooler, smarter, version of George Young.

That is the season that made it my pick for one the best shows ever. Watched a few episodes a day of seasons 1-3, but from the start of 4, I couldn't stop. Watched the whole season in one sitting.

Re: The HBO series "Oz"
The Wire is too preachy in my mind, at least to be called the greatest tv show of all time. As interesting as David Simon's outlook is, whenever I go back and rewatch an episode I'm always struck by how overt the themes are. Possibly that has to do with the fact that Simon is only too happy to explain those themes, at length, over and over again every chance he gets. For me, though, The Wire actually gets worse with repeated viewings.
The Sopranos on the other hand is just so far the greatest tv show of all time its not even funny. Just starting it again at the moment, and it is fascinating how all of the themes established in the first season play out over the course of the whole series. The psychology of the show is remarkable. When I first saw it I thought the psychiatry angle was kind of hackneyed, but the complexity of the relationships and how they develop, along with the insights that are offered into each and every character's motivations (both conscious and subconscious) are just amazing.
Oz isn't in the same league as either show. Would that wheelchair guy please just stfu and let me enjoy the show one time?

agreed, if you watch OZ don't even watch the last season, it totally ruins it. You basically should pretend it doesn't exist, and if somehow you do watch it, pretend you didn't.

Re: The HBO series "Oz"
Also consider "The Shield".
Not as slick as the Wire, but very very entertaining.
I live in Britland, and the first series of The Wire has just been on non subscriber TV. I have heard the hype and lots of better than Sopranos claims, which of course stimulated the curiosity, as I would have considered such a thing impossible. I would have to say such a claim is bollox. The Wire is awesome hugely compelling watchable TV, however I would say it is very one dimensional when compared against the Sopranos, and uses alot more cliches and cop show orthodoxy. The Sopranos scores higher for originality and complexity, however which shows makes for the best viewing? I would call it a draw.
