um, i think this is kind of a superficial way to interpret that scene. I think we're supposed to think it was part fake drama, part real and part because of the drugs.

I don't think stealing money was pre-meditated.

Also, regardless of how you feel about Hannah being supported by her family, it's a dick move to cut her off with no notice. Like, wtf!

It has nothing to do with drugs, she should have sobered up at that point. It's not meta at all, they are just showing that she is a selfish character. Obviously there will be parallels between Dunham/Hannah, but that doesn't mean it's meta-commentary.

We were ever supposed to think she was that high in the first place?

So we're supposed to watch this show featuring a dumb, ugly, and selfish lead character?

There's plenty of other TV shows to watch if you just want to see good looking people behave unrealistically.

I think she was pretty high when she goes to her parents, but in the morning she is straight sober.

I don't think she is dumb, but ugly/selfish lead characters = The Sopranos/Breaking Bad/etc.

the drama was the night before, wasn't it? my bad if I'm misremembering.

Obviously the stealing is selfish but she is going to be pretty desperate at this point. It's not exactly gonna make her likeable but she shouldn't be overly villified in the eyes of a reasonable viewer, imo.

edit.
Ugly? She's average isn't she...

I'll watch a few episodes of this see what I think, really liked Tiny Furniture and have high hopes for Dunham as a filmmaker.

I don't think she's ugly, but I didn't want to turn this into a discussion about her looks, so just went a long with Grue's post.

Point is up until the last few minutes of the show its plausible the intent is for the viewer to sympathize with her albeit in an odd way. After the end scene I don't see how anyone is supposed to root for her. Sopranos is somewhat of a good comparison but not really until the later seasons.

That wasn't your point earlier. CMONSON.

Okay, just re-watched the last scene and I definitely misinterpreted.

There's very little to empathize with . :P

What we need is more shows about runway models turned philanthropists who find the cure for cancer.

How about you stop complaining about it and write one then

Liked this a lot... thought her acting was refreshingly different and earnest. I thought it skirted the line between being a good portrayal modern Brooklyn chicks in a hipster circle and a total caricature of that pretty well, which isn't easy iyam. Jury is definitely out on whether it devolves into that, with like a bunch of references to them retweeting an iPhone photo of them at a beer garden, but so far so good.

The whole feel reminded me a lot of Louie, Triumph, once you take away the stand up bits. Can't think of anything else on TV that more closely resembles it, but I haven't seen everything...

Much funnier tonight I thought.

The dirty talk sex scene was really funny and all the stuff at the abortion clinic was hilarious. Loved the AIDS run.

Yeah- I really liked this. I'm not wild about the young Ms. Mamet's performance (but find her rather attractive), maybe a bit too broad- but the rest was really sharp. Just very funny, and felt rather authentic too.

I kind of agree. I don't think she's terrible and she's been pretty funny with all the stuff with her pathetic boyfriend, but I did notice that her performance was the one that seemed sort of familiar and not that nuanced.

Not sure how I felt about this one. Thought it was funny, but felt they kept going with a few jokes until all of the humor was drained from them. It's much more well done then say, How to make it in America as the new "trendy" show on HBO but I somehow care about these characters even less. It might just be that show where I watch every week and get a few laughs out of it, but I'm not so sure.

Mamet's daughter is the pink sweatsuit virgin girl and Peggy's lesbian friend on Mad Men, not the one with the pathetic boyfriend. That's Brian Williams' daughter.

Mamet's kid is the virgin (and the lesbian from Mad Men). You're talking about Allison Williams.

Oops my bad. No I find the Mamet girl pretty funny. Also impressive how different she is from her Mad Men character and still good. The other girl is my least favorite I think. Although the British girl is kind of annoying but I guess that's the point.
