I don't understand how so many people can get turned off by such minor things. I've heard a lot about peoples' concerns that once Ned dies, all his fans will quit the show. Wasn't there someone who was complaining about Tyrion's line, "a mind needs books to stay sharp," to the point that it seemed to really irk him? All these things seem so minor, how can anyone let such a small thing ruin their enjoyment?
I could mention though, that when I read the tower of joy scene which so many people seem to love, I thought the last lines of "now we begin, no now it ends!" was super corny. I may have had a facepalm reflex when I read that.

It's called being a nit. They're common. They like to watch movies from the 1930's and talk about how " superb " they are whilst they drink their wine with a pinky out.
Nothing wrong with that of course... it's just how they roll.

"A mind needs books to stay sharp" is a cheesy line that I casually asked about whether or not it had been in the book (didn't remember). People are morons and didn't understand why I described the line as "lame" or whatever, and I had to clarify several times because they interpreted it as "lol, that dumbass juntmonkey hates reading".
I never said a thing about it ruining my enjoyment. It's the exact same situation you describe in your second paragraph.
I don't think the Ned thing is comparable to nittery.

Re: Game of Thrones - BOOK SPOILERS ALLOWED
Jon does some things which are pretty outlandish for someone his age. I think that Robb's immaturity is incredibly realistic. He basically defers the decision making to his elders when possibly, then when left to his own devices acts like an immature boy.
Not sure there's much else you could ask for.
My big GoT nittery is when the goldcloaks turn on Ned. The part where Littlefinger puts his knife to Ned's throat is pretty bad. Its unnecessary, cliche, LF would want to be as far away from any action as possible, Ned would just break his wrist.
I hope it's not as cringeworthy on TV, but we'll see.
Thanks Bottomset, knowing that others will share in my pain does help.

Anyhow, people can change, Cersei clearly didn't. She was a murderer as a child, and she's a psycho as an adult, I don't think it's a stretch to say "she's always just been a bad person," and I think it's a huge stretch to say Robert's abuse turned her into what she is.
That she had some incentive to kill Melara doesn't mitigate what she did. On the contrary, that kind of cold calculation makes it worse. Healthy little girls with healthy little brains don't generally think things like "my best friend is inconvenient, wouldn't it be nice if she disappeared?" Much less get their hands dirty with it.

IMO, it's naive to think most/all people don't have the potential to turn out "evil" depending on their genetics and life experiences(some people will have traits that make it more likely and some people will need a way more ****ed up set of circumstances to turn "evil").
Tywin probably had Cersei pretty ****ed up young but if Robert hadn't been such a dick, perhaps she'd have changed.
It's been too long since I read the books to know how much I'm talkin out of my ass and I'm mostly responding to the reasoning people are using itt.
fwiw, I disagree with bluegrass and I always thought cersei was "evil" from the get-go. I interpreted the bran murder attempt as cersei's wish and it wasn't until shaffer's posts that I questioned that. I think it's possible that Cersei didn't want Jaime to kill Bran but I think it's more likely, in the moment, that it's exactly what she wanted and she deluded herself into thinking it was on Jaime afterwards.
My memory is really terrible so I really shouldn't debate this stuff, but I can't help myself.
edit. Did I miss someone actually mention this Jon part or does everyone else just remember? Plz to be posting/linking/pming it.

Jon becomes Lord Commander of the Night's Watch at like 17 years old.

Plenty of "evil" people do indeed have ****ed up childhoods, and that completely makes sense for Cersei. As for her potential to change, not so sure, but it's possible.
So I agree with all this. I still think Cersei is evil and was evil from the start (well, from an early age at least). I definitely think she was evil by the time she met Maggy the Frog. I don't think she's evil in an unrealistic "I do bad things because that's just how I roll, bro" sense. I don't know how she became evil.

Re: Game of Thrones - BOOK SPOILERS ALLOWED
Is the aging of actors/actresses going to pose a problem potentially for the show?
What I mean is a lot of the cast seems to be young adults, and they tend to age rapidly. A great example would be Walt from Lost.
Anyways, considering the show is apparently following the books and there are a ton of them - is there potential for an actor to outgrow their role?

Re: Game of Thrones - BOOK SPOILERS ALLOWED
Maybe something should be put into the thread title to indicate that it's BOOK SPOILERS ALLOWED for all the books. Or there could be threads for people who have read through books 1, 3, 4, 2, etc or something to cater to what % of spoilers they want for their personal experience.

Re: Game of Thrones - BOOK SPOILERS ALLOWED
Hodor carrying a 15 year old Bran on his back might look a little odd.
