thought htgawm was alright. will probably keep watching for now. dont really give it a ton of thought though. revenge comparison is spot on, gave up on that sometime last season as it delved into the absurd

also watched state of affairs, basically an amateur homeland with a tad of pll thrown in

Since it's Fox (or ABC) I won't bother. If it were on Starz or similar, I'd probably check it out.

i watched one or two episodes of empire. i thought it was bad. but my opinion is mostly dismissed around here as a troll. i'm not a troll. i just think differently.

the acting was bad. the writing was bad. the characters were meh. i think someone could make a great show with that subject matter. but empire is not that show.

I saw the Pilot and I agree it was fairly bad imo. The writing was dismal. The characters are so unoriginal and corny. The acting is also a bit uneven. Its pretty much if Glee met King Lear.

All that said, I thought the music was decent and I'll probably give it a couple more episodes before I completely give up on it. At best this has potential to become a guilty pleasures show.

After watching the Pilot of Empire, it's clear that it can go in one of two very different directions. If they clean up a lot of stuff, it could become an excellent show. If they go toward the bad side, then it will be completely unwatchable in about 10 weeks.

There's a good story built into it, but it's taking huge risks that are totally polarizing to its audience. It's on a big soapbox, and that's a problem for the show. It wants to prove a point that hasn't been tried yet in real life. If it retains its audience throughout, then maybe the point it's trying to make is true and can apply forward to real life. If there is a massive audience loss after the first episode, then basically a core theme of the show has been verified.

I thought the directing was overwrought and completely lacked self awareness. A lot of the dialog was brutally bad, and in many ways unnecessarily harsh. The best parts of the show were quite good, and the worst parts played like a daytime soap opera. It's always funny watching Terence Howard grope around in the dark with a part that he hasn't figured out how to play yet. There were points where he nailed the character, and others where he just seemed completely lost.

Did anyone watch Allegiance? I watched it and thought it was okay, but I'm very concerned it's directionless and going to end up being dumb. I think it would have worked better as a movie, but good thing it's not gonna matter since the show's getting canceled (I could even see it getting a week 3 or week 4 yank if it falls further in the ratings).

It got off to an interesting start, but then did an abrupt 180 that made me think the show has almost no chance of being a good show. For those wondering, even though it's a "knockoff" of The Americans, it's not really like that show. The Blacklist was essentially a "clone" of Person of Interest and the differences between The Americans and Allegiance are just as stark as those two shows' differences.

The piece of trivia is that the show was created, Pilot was written and directed by the guy who wrote Ocean's 12, The Sentinel, The Bourne Ultimatum, and then wrote and directed The Adjustment Bureau (this show is more in that style). The show kind of suffers being in the NBC house style. It needs a higher production value. I think audiences rejected it because they don't want to see that kind of story in modern times. Nolfi is definitely a good enough writer to make a good TV show, but I just can't see how they can make an interesting long arc out of the show since they already blew up a couple of those types of arcs so quickly.

Skipped Allegiance after early reviews. Plus I tried to read the wiki description and was still kinda confused. What makes the Americans (for me) is the time period. In the modern day, meh.

FOB was good enough to get another viewing. Going to be tough to keep the kid POV interesting. If they can make the Dad realish (not clownish) and keep the Mom balanced it could go.

Yeah, the time period of The Americans is really what makes the show work (the backstory of the show is that Weisberg saw the modern day thing and "wondered" what it would be like to have that kind of thing happening back then during the cold war), plus the acting. After watching Allegiance, I appreciated The Americans a lot more, but that shouldn't really come as much of a shock anyway. The talent behind Allegiance is good, but the story is odd.
