That was a good start to five seasons of story. The show is very good at using a lot of time to get very little achieved.

Only through five episodes but this stuck out for me.

The massive Martian Navy so had a crew of like... 5 people with the captain? Seemed like a skeleton crew.

And the poor area where the belters were protesting (reminiscent of the Martian quarters in Total Recall) ... Seems like they built 2 sets and called it a day. Just seemed very low budget.

But I get that

Basically even though GOT takes place in a world the size of Europe, that shows universe feels bigger than this one. Even though this shows universe it literally..the universe.

But got probably has a budget ten times what this does and doesn't need expensive special effects added into every single shot.

For what limitations the show has I thought it did well enough but it definitely struggled to express scale and size.

I don't know. I think part of the feel of the show is how absolutely claustrophobic the Belters' lives are.

My biggest disappointment is that they haven't set anything on Mars or the Moon yet. The show has a 2nd season coming, after some good reviews. Maybe NBC's decided to put a little more money into it.

heh, the belters would probably not agree with how spacious outer space is compared to living on earth(if they could that is). They keep poundering how fortunate earthers are with all that air and open space and sky. They live very crammed, never sees anything outside their shoebox. Belters rarely left their own rock in their life. I like the traveling scenes/when they are on ships, youre right that you dont get the feeling like I got in example firefly, but it´s mainly because this reality is much more gloomy and just dark/cold whilst firefly travels to differenet oxygen-capable planets and shoot revolvers on the ground like cowboys.

Your comparison with GoT isn´t fair imo. Distances between things is bigger in outer space yes, but every set, every scene is much much much smaller in The Expanse because, yeah, building big **** is costly(for the persons in the world its set in, not set-cost itself)

and obv the budget is prolly in the region of 100x

Right but we saw the same people in the same exact spots multiple times. It feels like belter society is maybe thousands of people large? If it's millions I don't think the show communicated that at all (through the five episodes I've watched)

Well, so far everything has happened on one rock. I'm not sure what else you want them to do. They have clearly pointed out that these colonies are all over the asteroid belt.

Not really. Some happened on Ceres, some on Eros, some on Tycho Station, and some on Earth.

Through episode 5*, the belter part was only on Ceres with a little bit in space. Tycho isn't really part of the "belter culture" that the post was talking about.

*I could be remembering wrong since I've seen it all and have read the books.

I probably missed the "through episode 5" part of the original post.

Re: the bolded, isn't Tycho pretty much OPA sympathetic? I haven't read the books.

I want one of those cool transparent "phablets" that the characters use. Also want a Pur'n'Kleen Water Company uniform for playing live poker. Don't want Miller's hat or the haircut for sure. Don't want to get that horrid infection or any radiation sickness either. Not sure if either of the two "heroes" will survive that or not. Too bad that Julie got that infection after all those episodes of searching for her. Miller cant even talk to her or see what she really looks like in person. The set design, costumes, and special effects in this show are great. It took the whole season but now the show finally has clear-cut villains and heroes too.

Great season finale was wondering how they were going to the infection on Eros. Didn't need the filler stuff like the little girl Naomi tries to save, though.

Some minor spoilers from the books, so don't read on if you're a nit:

Finally got around to finishing this. Uh maybe I'm really slow or it's because I watched the last 4 episodes in one sitting but I did not realize until near the end that it was not going to end at the same time as the books. I can see why they ended the season the way they did, but I'm really confused how they're gong to continue from here. There's a pretty clear pause between book 1 and 2, so I wonder if they'll just finish book 1 midway through next season then flash forward a few years or what.

Having read a good deal into book 2 the inclusion of the stuff on Earth in the show makes a lot more sense to me, but still think that character is very out of place in Season 1. I mean there's an episode where she personally goes to Holden's parents and asks if Holden is a good guy. WTF. Clearly just filler. If she has nothing worth doing for the entire season then don't include her, that's probably why she wasn't included in the books until later.

Overall I thought s1 was not awful, but not great. Definitely had a B movie set feel to it. I thought BSG had much better production values, but that's largely because it all takes place in one setting. Still SyFy needs to up their production values. The parts that stuck to the story were all good, but just about everything added was awful. The story is tight enough that no filler is needed, and every time there was some it really stuck out. The episode with the stowaway on the Rocinante is by far the worst thing on the show, and it didn't need to be there. As mentioned Naomi and the girl didn't need to happen. I think if the show manages to tighten up the script and up the production values it could be a decent show, but as is I don't see it making it however many more years it needs to finish.

As a non-book-reader, I don't think anything stood out as awful / obviously out of place / filler.

Nice to see a new post itt tho!

They needed a way for us to find out about Holden and what motivates him. In the book Holden just thinks about this stuff. Hard to show that. The earth stuff also established the UN as the major power in the solar system and how different it was from the belt by showing it. Much more effective than just having people talk about it. I didn't see it as filler at all.

Yeh the massive differences between Belters-Mars-Earth aren't portrayed as well, although it would be hard too.

I thought the general production values and CGI were generally really good, and they definitely exceeded my (all bit it, low) expectations.

Ok hopefully it's just my opinion from having read the book then. I could see some of the other stuff being passable, but the episode where she goes to holdens parents... no way. I mean the DE facto ruler of one of the most powerful organizations in the galaxy has nothing better to do than to go ask some parents if their son is a good boy? That's filler. There's other ways to get info across.

Yeah I agree thethethe. They tried hard with the cgi of the belter being tortured but it's impossible to make every character in the belt look that way. I have no idea how they'd portray the lower gravity either. Aside from the physical differences I think they did a good job with the belter slang and some of the different mentalities, but it's a lot to cover.

I think the flappy bird was there to show the lower gravity environment? if there was a deeper meaning, I didn't get it lol
