Me too.

Hopefully the guy she said was her mentor, gets brought into the focus in some latter episodes, so we get to see Sherlock compete against 2 masterminds.

Assuming the mentor is still alive then (s)he surely has to be the person pulling the strings of Mycroft trying to get Sherlock to leave New York.

That sounds like a pretty good guess.

I have been enjoying this season immensely. Moriarty ftw. Actually I just like the actress because her face always seems to be screaming, "**** me, right now!"

Everyone still watching?

The final two eps were pretty good, strong ending to the season.

So will Sherlock use again? I doubt it. What does his new job mean for him?

Best ep of a fairly blah season. This show is capable of being really good but but seems content to be a standard crime procedural most of the time.

Losing kitty will be pretty meh for the show. There was a lot more they could have done

IMO, the quality of that episode just underscores how badly they mismanaged the planning of the season.

If the flashback (Kitty's origin story) had been the premiere then we'd have been immediately invested in her story and have a reason for Sherlock's return instead of a losing all momentum due to the handwave.

Then the season could have forshadowed the upcoming confrontation with Kitty's captor better instead of it really just being back-story. Maybe Watson could have started the new job a couple episodes earlier. Doing it so far into the season, and so disconnected from everything else just feels like someone was reading disgruntled posts online and decided they'd better do something...

I thought that was the best episode it's had this season too, but to echo CMAR's thoughts, I don't get why they even bothered with the switch out.

They essentially blew up a good semi-formulaic procedural for 12 episodes, and then put it back together. I think this show will get renewed, because it's a fantastic syndication property going into its syndication season, but if any show could break that precedent it would be this one (the ratings are awful this season).

I thought it was an interesting call back to the Moriarty storyline, but with a different outcome. At the end of season 1, Sherlock was preparing to torture and kill the guy he thought was Moriarty, and in this one Kitty was preparing to torture and kill her Moriarty. It feels like a bit of a waste that she's gone, but it was really a kind of dumb move to bring her in knowing how the arc of that story went. It's the kind of risk you take in the 4th season, not the third, and especially not at the beginning of the season.

I actually really liked the Kitty character, and definitely would watch a show that's just her and Sherlock. But, it was just very poorly introduced and executed to have that kind of resolution in the midst of a show that didn't need it.

I figured something big happened in the episode, because this is the first time the thread has had any activity this season, so I caught up on it first this weekend. I figured Joan or Kitty was gonna get whacked, and Kitty did basically get whacked.

Almost feels like the season is a long, drawn-out backdoor pilot. Maybe if the ratings had continued strong this season? I certainly haven't heard anything about a spin-off though.

Yeah, it really did have a backdoor Pilot/spin off type vibe. I don't really understand why they took the risk, when that could have been a much better mid-season story interjected in rather than having that be how he got back, etc. Like Kitty showing up at some point could have been great (then they could have filled in his away time backstory). I think they made the tactical error that they thought the audience would want to see The Joan Watson show. Very odd. The season hasn't been bad, it's just been kind of uninteresting until the last couple of episodes.

My theory is they were testing an a story b story format, they did that a few times that I can remember, but at some point the decision was made to reset the show back to how it was.

Ftr I liked what they were doing as a concept, I just think the execution could have been way better. Who knows how long they were planning to draw out the kitty reveal, it definitely has the feel of being a full season sub story that they prematurely ended, given the huge change of pacing.

So were they implying at the end that he did take the heroin?

I assume so. Why else would his father be coming back?
