I just finished season 1...season 2 started this past week.

I can't help but love Upstairs/Downstairs type shows. The creator of the show is Jullian Fellows, who won an Oscar for writing Gosford Park. Downton Abbey takes place in the same time period and place as that film, 1914 England.

The cast is superb, the writing is great - if a tad soap opera-like at times - and the real home playing Downton Abbey is breathtaking.

Anyone else enjoying this show?

i thought the pacing of season 2 premier was too fast -- it sure covered a lot of ground.

Caught up with season 1 and first 3 eps of season 2 so far thanks to the Fireberg and Icewall podcast where they keep talking it up. Really solid show.

This show really is great. Better than Mad Men, imo. Spectacular set and costumes. Interesting characters, and good storylines. Some super hot ladies, Maggie Smith cracks me up as well.

I'm so frustrated with this show. It was brilliant the first season but the second season has turned into a ridiculous soap opera.

I heard the same thing (just finished the first season, but follow the UK press). Also saw massive spoilers for the Christmas special on the front pages of a couple of UK newspapers - seriously, what's with that? Spoiled things for me.

Season 2 Episode 6

Spoiler:
Dude actually survived the Titanic, forgot who he was, got misidentified as Canadian and took his name from gin bottle. Really??? Bad if he's an impostor, super lazy writing if he isn't.

Definitely would have stopped watching after episode 7 if there were a couple of seasons to go, it was pretty awful.

Season 2 had some dumb short lived storylines
Spoiler:
The Canadian deformed guy, and
Edith driving a tractor. The maid who gets pregnant is boring and dragged out for most season.
but the show is still better than most everything else currently on TV.

I'm sad to here this. I'm four episodes into season one and really enjoying it.

Stop watching after season one and just assume everyone dies in the war.

You won't be rage filled whenever you see the show mentioned that way.

Surprised this has so few posts considering pretty much everyone I know loves this show. Just watched the season 2 finale. Pretty great.

I did enjoy the season finale....no ridiculous contrivances, and some great zingers from Maggie Smith.

While I was disappointed with this season, I'll give season 3 a watch - it's getting some very good reviews from across the pond. Also, it's going to have Shirley MaClaine as Cora's mom.

I think it will be at least till September before anything new is aired in England. The behind the scenes doc that was shown before the Christmas special is worth looking up, if you like the show.

Have seen everything prior to the Christmas episode. Thought s1 was incredibly well done and really enjoyed it. S2 was crazy dumb at parts, but overall still pretty enjoyable. I'm pretty sure we're not supposed to hate Branson, but I can't stand him - maybe just because Sybil is a fox and can do a hell of a lot better.

Also, can't believe the show is not getting more attention on here - everyone I know is watching it

just watched 1st ep of 1st season on netflix and came here to decide whether I should keep watching...suprised it doesn't have a bigger thread but then again its target audience is probably not 25 year old males

1st ep was a bit boring at start but picked up once the bad characters started doing their thing

cant help but feel like I'm watching a soap opera of sorts however

Marathoned this in the last couple days, really really enjoyed it overall. I agree with those who say season 2 seemed a lot worse than season 1, but I definitely enjoyed parts of it quite a bit.

We're not supposed to dislike Branson? I'm not so sure, I've disliked him since day 1, but now that you mention it, maybe we're not supposed to. Hm.

Also I love lady Mary and want to marry her. I'm not a snob though, I'll marry Daisy too.

I really liked it. Yeah it is soapy and a bit much but it is really good at what it is. I always wanted to see the next episode after I finished one.

First season great, second season a bit much but I still enjoyed it.
