If you're Jake Harris, I don't think you ever get over how you behaved in your dad's final days (starting with the incident on the boat). Much less having the entire world be a witness to it. Ten years from now I don't think Jake is going to be doing well.

my DirecTV scheduler is showing a normal 1 hour "Deadliest Catch" episode and a normal 1 hour "After the Catch" episode for next Tuesday. Where are you seeing a 2 hour episode?

The previews for next week's episode say a special 2 hour episode. My scheduler says the same as yours. They will probably change it in the next couple of days but I'm gonna set my dvr to record "ATC" 1 hour over just to be safe. Gonna be awful.

Yea I agree. It's hard to feel sorry for him though because he's always seemed like a spoiled little brat who took advantage of his dad.

Josh is the one who I really feel for.

I felt bad for Phil and his sons. His stroke came shortly after his son told him he had a problem with drugs, and that was really hard for Phil to hear.

Addiction is a terrible terrible thing and has quite a pull on millions of ppl. Just watch an episode of Intervention. I couldn't imagine someone w/an addiction to drugs dealing w/his dad's death who also happened to be a recovered alcoholic. Really sad that phil died he seemed like a great guy.

Sig becomes more of a douchebag every episode this season. He sits in the wheelhouse and drives the crew to the edge of collapse, makes all the decisions and won't accept any input as his role commands. Then whines like a cry baby about Edgar being now responsible for his replacement.

The show has gone the way of OrangeCountyChoppers with the over the top peons of personal relationships.

But honestly guys, if any one of these guys told you they had a drug problem, would it come as any sort of surprise? They put their bodies through absolute torture and try to survive. Turning to painkillers, oxy, whatever to "help" is probably standard for them.

And yes, Sig has become more unlikable as we go on.

Feel horrible for Jake Anderson. Dad's car at the end of a logging road with no signs of him? Murder/Suicide 80% of the time. Lost and died to accident or survivability 15%. Take your pick for the last 5% (Aliens!).

It was kind of weird the dynamic of Johnathan listening through the door when Jake and Josh were arguing.

I think it was more like he was keeping an eye on them incase the fight got physical.

With the amount of dip, energy drinks and cigarettes these guys smoke to help them stay alert during the long shifts their bodies have to hit a wall sometime. I would imagine painkillers are used quite a bit by crew members

The part that really got to me was when he was talking to Jake or Josh about Phil. Heartbreaking stuff.

Athletes may face sanctions or suspensions for steroids now, yet back in the 70's the team doctors were the prescriber's. These guys, if not on camera would probably be poppin pills all the time. Not a shot directed to any of them btw. I used to work corrosion control in the bleach plants of pulp & paper mills. The things we had to do wrt to confined spaces and chemicals isn't even permissible today.

I see Andy was careful to ensure his GEICO coffee mug got a proper placement. Will this be the final season, or do they go one more?

I know I'm in the minority on this, but I don't really feel like what happened to Phil to be "tragic" or anything like that. This is what happens when you don't take care of yourself. I'm not like "OMG! This is hard to watch!". Not that I blame anyone to think that way, because obviously it's stressful to see.

I'm looking at these episodes at more of a human relations/physology angle than anything. It's fascinating how Josh IMMEDIATELY stepped up to take charge once Phil got sick and how Jake has become like a lost puppy. I mean Josh stepped up before the f'ing medics even got there. BOOM! Just like that.

These 2 guys are the perfect examples of what happens when the human brain is suddenly put into a real stressful situation.

Then you also have Jonathan cutting his vacation short to help the family out, Freddie telling Josh to be w/ his dad, Sig being matter-of-fact about it b/c he knows how Phil took care of himself, ect. These things are way more interesting to me than anything else on the show.

Its weird how of the two sons Josh seems so much more the responsible one, and yet Jake always seems to be Phil's favorite. I wonder what the history is, as I know it took longer for Josh to get into crabbing than Jake.

Yeah it is kind of curious.

I mean who would you choose to run your business? It's not even close.

Josh always had a better relationship with Phil than his younger brother did, IMO. Josh and Phil were often joking around. Josh was the one who spoke with Phil on the phone the first time he was in the hospital. Josh's stronger relationship with Phil (and everyone else on the boat) has probably been a point of contention between him and Jake - although it was never addressed on the show. Jake was the first to work for his dad, but as soon as Josh joined the boat, you could see the closeness between Josh and Phil.

The comments Phil made earlier this season about how he expected Jake to take over the boat someday, and about how he (Phil) and Jake were alot alike, were surprising to hear, and never put into context.

I dunno. I've always had the impression when Phil talks with his kids that he's closer to Jake. Just in the body language and expression on his face. Maybe its a case of feeling softer towards the "baby of the family". I wasn't surprised he wanted to leave the boat to Jake. Sucks that Jake is such a screw-up.

neither ldo, neither one seems to have any clue as to how to run the boat/business. Josh is obviously more mature though.

I posted it upthread, from an interview with Josh, but Phil wanted Josh to do something else besides running a crab boat. Josh seems to have a lot of potential, so that's understandable. He wanted something better for Josh.

Oh please guys enough already with the Phil liked Josh/Jake better crapping up this thread... he was obviously close to both of them. The two kids have much different personalities... Josh has better people skills, and is more outgoing. Jake is quieter, and more introverted.

You can't say anything about a dad's life-long relationship with his kids from a few clips on a heavily edited show. He talked highly about his kids and how he loved that his job allowed him to spend time with both of them.
