Sig is always on the chase for more, more, more. Wasn't it last year his boat fished cod for a month before crab season opened? This extra one off to the far NW, if it pays off, the money might make up for the crew strain. But to beat the crap out of the deckhands before Red crab season might not be the best route to take.

meh, while their job is obviously tough and grueling, they work for what, like 2-3 months out of the year? Putting in some extra work has to be worth it for an extra 4-5k or whatever.

Hard to say, like a pitcher working on 1 days rest is not as effective as one on 3 days rest. The job is all hurry up and wait over and over. We'll see as the season continues, they sure are doing more crew epiphanies this year.

yeah thats true.

Its all rather interesting though. Sig may be feeling the pressure of the economy and as such is pushing to earn some extra money. He always seems to be one of the more forward thinking captains (along with Phil). He must see the worth in the trip. I wonder when we will see Edgar air his feelings about becoming captain and all that BS. Really curious to see how Sig reacts. Part of me thinks he will understand and accept it. How can he not after all?

I used to be a warehouse manager for a delivery company. I worked from Tues. night around 5 PM until 6 AM Friday morning. Except for maybe 10 hrs. total, I was working the entire time. It was great to wake up around 1 Friday afternoon and then be off until Tues. night. But by Thursday night, I was a wreck. The toll does add up, especially when you do it repeatily. I ended up having to quit after a year because it was just too hard from a physical standpoint. Had I done the same job over 4 or 5 days, I'd probably still be working there.

I think another reason Sig wants the Blue crab is so no one else can take it, he's claiming territory per se. Heard them say only 4 boats out and the first opening in 12 years.

I can't believe these episodes are not on demand. I only saw the first one (this season) now I need to hope they play a marathon to catch up.

I've never seen it on Tues. nights at 9 because I watch other stuff on TV. I've never had problems catching episodes. If there's one thing you can count on, it's the Discovery Channel running Deadliest Catch marathons.

I hope so. I keep checking but whenever I am free it is not on.

With how many marathons I have watched I am so frustrated I cannot watch it when I want.

Did anyone think the camera work/ production for this weeks episode was a lot different then in the past? Especially after about the first 20 minutes, once we went to the Time Bandit everything seemed shot in extreme closeup and changed angles about every 2 seconds. It seemed very inferiour to every other episode this season.

I love love love this show, I have every single season. I am so impressed with these guys, I always show Bakes their focus in doing the simplest things like throwing the hook in the water to catch the rope without even having to think about it, like breathing, and say that to have that kind of clear mind and lack of self awareness while doing something so tricky, precise and dangerous in those conditions was like being a super hero. I wish I had that type of focus without having to even put effort into it like them. What heros!

The kodiak could have the dumbest crew ever.

Normally I would agree, but it's hard counting when you are new to a job and totally stressed out. When I was in HS, I had a part time job as a cook at Pizza Hut. One of my responsabilities was to count how many medium and large pies we had during the dinner rush. I had to check the walk-in cooler, the proofer, the ******er and the make table. It sounds easy but when there are a millon things going on, it was hard to keep track. Once I was used to it, I could do it with my eyes closed.

I can definately see how it's hard to keep track of crabs when you have to throw some back in the ocean and have 3 or 4 other people counting at the same time. But that's management's responsibilty to teach and be aware of it. Wild Bill should know better.

To me, Sig seems like he's coming unglued this season. He's always been sort of hard-ass, but you could tell he was a reasonable guy who was very good at his job and cared about the safety of his crew. Now it seems like he's pushing things way too far just for the sake of his ego.

He is a size 14 ****** alright. The push and drive to make money is one thing, but Sig has the mentality to use and abuse his crew as if they were hydraulic machines. After abusing them for Blue crab, sitting in a heated wheelhouse on his ass, he pushes to wreck his crew chief's back for no real reason other than ego.

Its not ego, its just how he works. He pushes himself and his crew at all times. The quicker they finish up, the lower their overall costs and the more money they make. Did you guys notice how much money each crew member made just for King crab season? 55k, because they finished up so quickly.

Yea Sig even said at the end of one epsiode that they were pissed at him but when they got their paycheck they would get over it really quick.

Sad that they are starting to show Phil getting sick.

One of the crew talked about Sig and his continuation of his derby days fishing ways. There's no doubt a faster pace will use less fuel, but that speed won't put $5K in a mans pocket. Sig's Blue crab chase was a waste of time and energy, no crab=no money, he cost his crew on that one. The quota system was introduced to add some safety and better conditions for the crews. There's still a window, dead crab don't sell.

I posted before that his Bligh way will alienate his crew, its not that he has to pity his deck boss, but to push the stress button on a man with back problems who's tying to kick the pain pill addiction, is an overblown ego in play.

If he wasn't his brother, is there any chance that sig would take a guy who can't do any work on the trip.

The way the edit has gone this season, Edgar wants out. Even if Sig could get off his ass and work the deck I doubt Edgar would stay in the wheelhouse.

Don't forget the fact that Edgar has an ownership stake in the boat, he'd get paid even if he's not there.

I'm sure part of it is Sig realizes that once the show ends, people will forget about them. He's trying to do his best to capitalize on the exposure while he can.

They operate the Northwestern with a smaller crew than the other boats, hence longer hours, and higher pay per deckhand. Sig has that go go go mentality and it's served them well. Yes. It completely sucks that Edgar has a back injury. You could tell that it got to Sig at one point early on, but once he gets going, he just can't help himself.

Hard to tell how serious Edgar is about wanting out. It could easily have been a conversation fueled by exhaustion during King Crab. I'm guessing it would be pretty hard to walk away with the salt water in the family's veins.

I'm almost holding my breath watching every episode now, knowing what's coming with Phil.

Two people "retired" from their boats a couple seasons ago. Neal Hillstrand on the Time Bandit, and Lenny Lekanoff on the Wizard.

They are both still fishing.

Between Phil talking about death and the botched rescue attempt, the last 20 mins. of the episode was just so intense.
