I'm looking for shows that continue the story line across episodes or seasons, such that you can't watch an episode without watching the ones before it.

Please no sitcoms or "pattern" shows. By "pattern" show, I mean a show that, for example solves a new case/mystery each show. If they make references to prior episodes, it still doesn't count that as a continuing story line.

I'll start off the list:

Breaking Bad
Homeland
Game of Thrones
House of Cards
24
True Detective
Vikings
Orange is the New Black*
Lost*

*Close to being "pattern" shows

i don't think there's that many acclaimed non-network television drama shows that don't satisfy your definition. some more than others, granted, but this seems like a bit of a strange thread.

The words you're looking for are "serial" and "episodic". "Formulaic" (or even "monster of the week") is another useful term.
