Look at all the different preferences, opinions, and viewpoints itt. It takes a great show to have so many differing views on many different characters.

Sure he was flawed. That's what made the show so great - all of the characters were heros, but they were also humans with flaws and at times they did something stupid or selfish or hurtful to their friends and family. Just like we all have.

He was an insecure, goofy guy who didn't have any special powers but still kept going out there and battling demons and trying to make his life work.

Yeah, leaving Anya at the alter was brutal but it was also pretty damn real, IMO. He handled it very badly. How many of us handled love and relationships badly at that age?

There weren't many characters I actively disliked, although I thought Cordelia was annoying as **** (which was the point, I guess) and Amy and the whole magic addiction arc was badly done.
+1 to most of this.

I don't know if I think doing the 'magic addiction' arc was a great idea in the first place - I think they were trying to cram as much realism as possible into season six and didn't really need to.

Cordelia, however, was ****ing hilarious at times, and I thought her transition from being the show's most easily-disliked character (besides Snyder) into being an ultimately sympathetic and well-meaning one throughout the latter parts of season two and all of season three was brilliant.

People might talk about Breaking Bad turning its protagonist into a villain etc, but Joss Whedon was turning characters and dynamics on their heads with ease more than a decade ago.

You're a little biased in your opinion of Dawn, though, given your obsession with Michelle

I think we probably have differing opinions on where he is warranted in yelling at others.
Like I mentioned, Buffy just stabbed her (then) love her life with the pointy end and comes back home only to have her friends abandon her, the school to not let her back in, and her mom's friend to shove it in her face how hard it was on her mom, but also to have him ridicule her in public after, you know... she saved his life and the entire world at the detriment of her own personal sanity.

Xander: "Look, I'm sorry that your honey was a demon, but most girls don't hop a Greyhound over boy troubles."
Like... seriously? Seriously? Can he get over his jealousies over Angel for a second to realize just how much devastation that entire situation must have caused for Buffy for one second? No, because he sucks, is selfish, and completely lacks empathy.
I'm not saying Xander isn't layered or that Xander isn't realistic, what I'm saying is that I hate him and I would never be friends with him. His character is by far the worst for me. Does he play a part in the show? Sure. Do I wish he had died a horrible death at the end? Definately.

Michelle amanicprense is much prettier than Michelle Trachtenberg, but she is very pretty and looks quite a bit like her imo.

There's some talk that Xander was supposed to be killed off as early as S3 and throughout the seasons. Even Nick Brendon says, that he's not proud of arguing over wanting to stay, but that he wasn't in a comfortable situation at the time and BtVS is what he had. As such, the continuation of his character arc might have seemed forced.

No he was a good character. I think Gizmo identifies with Buffy a lot imo.

I mean, I agree that all the stuff you've pointed out is selfish behaviour etc. I just think you're pretty much taking that one isolated period around the end of season 2/beginning of season 3 when he was being a dickhead and just ignoring all the good stuff he did throughout the entire series. It's totally valid to say "I don't like this guy as a person and wouldn't in real life", but I would hate to imagine how much someone has to do IRL to get on your good side once they've wronged you.

I'm really, really glad they didn't do that. I think if they had, they would have lost a lot of their male audience. Not that men can't, shouldn't or don't watch shows with mostly female characters, but Xander is a real viewer/author avatar in the show and I can't imagine how the characters' progress into young adulthood would have come across without him in the mix, struggling with the pressures of not going to college and trying to find his way in the world.

yeah xander had his dickish moments but for me his overall balance throughout the show was positive--the whole leaving-at-the-altar business would be awful in real life but in the buffy universe where some demon can show up and zap you to a scary-ass holodeck future-you as a fat, decaying, miserable cynic of a husband, well, i'm a wee bit more understanding of xander's panicked flight at the last minute, ya know?

willow i loved, even when she went a little crazy--the after-school-special dopiness of "drugs--I mean, dark magic is bad, mmkay" aspect notwithstanding, it was at least interesting watching cute-as-hell nerdy introvert girl going all edgy and strung out and psycho powerful

so yeah: love buffy, willow, xander, the initial sacred trio, plus giles, and spike of course, and then everyone else on a secondary tier of slightly less potent affection, minus the obviously hateable douches

Am I alone thinking sometimes Buffy needed to get yelled at? I mean, sure, she's the Slayer, but she was often obnoxiously self-absorbed, IMO. Hard not to be when the weight of the world is on your shoulders, but still.

I thought the various conflicts between the trio were completely in keeping with their characters. Sure they were friends, and great friends, but when one of them is an insecure doofus, another is a shy computer geek turned Wiccan badass, and the third is an also often insecure girl with super powers who is constantly conflicted between her duty to mankind and her desire to be normal, conflict is bound to arise.

Having them occasionally fight and lash out at each other is a hell of a lot more believable than having Willow and Xander just be thrilled to play second fiddle to the Slayer.

On Xander:
One of my favorite characters, probably because my humor is very close to his one, sadly.
Really loved the episode that centered him when he entered that Zombie Gang.

She definitely needed to be yelled at sometimes, and he always knew when and always was a good enough friend to do it.

She was out of line when she was trying to stop Willow from killing Warren though imo, and that was one of the rare times she needed to be yelled at but wasn't.

Buffy stopping Willow from committee a terrible gruesome revenge vigilante murder (tm) was completely consistent.

(in before "was Willow morally justified?" debate )

I think Angel was consistently good, while Buffy had some cringeworthy bad episodes. But it had those *genius* *amazing* * sit there with your mouth open in awe* ones, too. Never really felt that way watching Angel
