The people who complained about a plothole from poison-mania had a valid excuse to gripe about it, but not for the reason they laid out, which was mainly that Walt wouldn't hurt a child.
But yeah it was for sure a plothole, and Vince kind of admits this much with his "fill in your own blanks" response. The way I looked at on first viewing (I'm at S04E04 so I'm getting to my rewatch soon) I remembered feeling like not having Walt around the entire episode was weird. It might not be a good enough writing device, but I felt it was good enough indicator to be suspicious of him. And ultimately, the final payoff was EASILY worth it (cuing to the lilly of the valley), one of the GOAT season endings and right up there neck in neck with the Season 3 ender for me. So yeah, can't wait to get to that part again.
