just finished.

what a show!!

it was awful, terrible, great, hilarious, tragic, disgusting, and about a billion other things. a real work of art.

jesse plemmons, the guy who kills the kid on the motorcycle is really good. he was good in friday night lights too. he was good in fargo. but i think this was his best work. he was such a disturbed guy, but in a really subtle way. he was very scary without seeming to try. he was just ****ed up.

i also loved the international business woman drug dealer. she was hilarious and great.

walt is such a ****ing *******, no doubt. but not because he's a drug dealer, because he wreaks so much havoc for his greed. it's insane how he is vilified for being a drug dealer, like being a drug dealer automatically makes you a horrible person. meanwhile hank is a ****ing pos cop. cops are way worse than drug dealers.

do shows only end when ratings start to fall? why can't they go on for eternity like the simpsons or married with children. wahhhh.

Just started a rewatch and noticed how much Vince Gilligan likes old lady power walkers.

Breaking Bad was completely different than the standard. They were averaging about a million and a half viewers per episode until the last couple seasons which saw exponential growth in ratings. The last season increased viewership 400%, and the series finale's ratings quintupled the previous season's finale. The amazing thing is that AMC actually wanted a short 5th season to save money, and after the showrunners said no, they compromised with an elongated 5th season that was split over two years.

Yeah, that makes no sense. If the viewing audiences are there, why wouldn't AMC want to prolong the show as long as the showrunners would allow, and as long as it's still good TV?

I thought AMC wanted two regular length seasons, Gillian was all naw dogg we can't prolong the story that long, Gilligan wanted one 12-16 episode season, they compromised with an 8 episode season 5 and another 8 episode season 6.

Married with children was cancelled by FOX, they didn't even give the show a proper ending. That ticked off a lot of fans back then.

There are lots of reasons to end a show, poor ratings being one of them. Production cost is another huge issue, shows get more expensive every season, because talent wants to be paid more money. Extreme examples are Two and a Half Men and The Big Bang Theory, where actors salaries increased by something like 10x.

That's the main reason why it's so much easier to let a show like the Simpsons or Southpark run forever. They can keep costs low. And if they have to save money, they just fire people. That's what happend to Alf Clausen recently.

For Breaking Bad, I think they found the perfect time to end it. The story was told, that's usually a good time to end a show. OTOH, I thought there could have been at least another one or two seasons of the Sopranos.

sopranos, seinfeld, and friends are the most overrated shows ever

sopranos had two interesting characters, and almost no interesting stories. it was probably much better when it came out. i didn't watch til just a few years ago.

Just noticed something subtle. I looked up this scene today, when I needed a Miller Time joke:

(Insert tweet here)

Just noticed how far back Mike is standing. This makes him appear smaller. Diminished. Indicates how he has very little say over this magnet scheme.

(If you think i'm reaching, this device was introduced in Citizen Kane, in every scene where others take actions that affect Kane. In some scenes, they had him so far in the background, they needed to invent a special lens, and pour every light they had on him, to keep him in focus.)

Gotta be honest, while I found the second half of season three, through seasons four & five great, with some real brilliance, overall I found it way overrated. I only binge watched a couple of weeks ago & had I had have watched it back in the day, I doubt I'd have stuck it through as I wasn't overtly impressed by the first two seasons or first half of the third & indeed only continued watching due to all the praise it was getting but I found it patience-testing.

This is probably blasphemy to say but it actually struck me as formulaic in parts- Walt & Jesse cook up a batch, then something goes wrong, losing them their money somehow, causing them to squabble & break off their partnership, before it's repeated again as they get back together to cook up another batch. Some of the episodes were also horribly self indulgent for me, such as the one where they're stuck for an entire episode nearly in the RV & don't even get me started on that Fly episode.

Glad I watched it & can understand its status & again last two seasons were amazing, but again while I liked overall, I still find it way overrated.

good link here about why those episodes are the way that they are:

'fly' is so divisive and is probably one of the best litmus tests ever to accurately divide viewers of a show into two camps.

"liking Fly" ranks up there with "liking season 2 of the Wire" as a useful methodology for separating good intelligent folks from unformed garbage people

After a second rewatch of the series I found it as you did, formulaic.

I rewatched for probably the ~5th time a month or so ago and still loved it. I read along for the first ~100 2p2 posts after each episode from s3-end. Someone said something along the lines of Walt/Jesse finding themselves in impossible situations but finding realistic ways to get themselves out of them. I think that's what made the show great tbh.

Also, "Crawl Space" was still incredible even after a handful of times seeing that. So many goosebumps.

Hot take: GOAT show, but not the best for re-watching. So much of the GOATness was, "OMG, what's going to happen next?" Most tantalizing cliff-hangers ever. You can't recreate that feeling on a re-watch.

I rewatched a few months ago, in just 3 weeks a think. Was totally hooked again. I do think the first half of S3 is not that good, but its keeps getting better from there.

I read somewhere long ago that the fly episode was what is was because it aired on the same day as the lost finale in 2010. Mabye bull****, im going to look it up. I did like that ep.
