I remembered that beer commercial but didn't realize it was when BB came on. I see shades of Saul already.

Started watching BrBa all over again last night. Did the writers know at the time of the pilot episode how it would all play out (Hank getting offed in the dessert, Walt relocating to New Hampshire, etc...)? Did they have the basic plot down then filled in the gaps? Maybe they had several possible outcomes and decided as they went along? I'm curious to know how that works.

They might know an end game - Walt will die - but I doubt they even knew anything about Hank besides him being Walt's brother-in-law and that he worked for the DEA. They usually don't know any details of how it will end...getting a pilot made and then a commitment for a few episodes is an enormously difficult process - so the creators are concentrating on the those episodes and those episodes only.

They changed a lot as the show progressed. Best example was Jesse, who was initially supposed to die at the end of season 1.

bloodline (a good netflix show, i recommend) has a pretty self-contained first season, to the point where everyone was kinda surprised there is actually going to be a second season. then it was revealed that the writers pitched 5-6 seasons initially, so i'm guessing that that is pretty standard. however, in this instance, i agree with dom that they probably knew the general trajectory and that it would end with 'walt will die, and before he does there will be an inevitable showdown with his brother in law'.

there's some info here that kinda answers your question - basically they didn't start thinking in great detail about how to end the series until S3:

It's how they wrote Lost, an overall 6-season trajectory and they filled in the blanks on a season by season basis.

For some reason, I was in the mood for some Saul last night. Popped in the Breaking Bad episode where he was introduced (also called "Better Call Saul").

Even more unusual for me, I wandered through the special things on the DVD, one of which was the "Better Call Saul" commercial.

At the end of the commercial (panned away from in the episode), there's pages and pages of scrolling text. I paused, and they're all things like "May contain peanuts", "Many bags look alike", just about every generic warning we all ignore that could be thrown there.

After this wall of text, there's a break, and then the final line: Paid for by the committee to re-elect Saul Goodman.

Maybe Saul takes on the new name and becomes a city councilman or something before completely becoming the "criminal lawyer" person?

Wow, that would be really pushing the limits of keeping everything straight between the shows to the littlest detail, but at this point it wouldn't surprise me.

My guess is it's some sort of scam. Maybe he has some bull**** office, like Alternate on the Inland Wetlands Commission. There are all sorts of low-level local bureaucratic elected offices where they basically find volunteers to fill them and they're on the ballot unopposed. But, as an elected official, now he can get "campaign donations" and use them as a slush fund for whatever dealings he needs money for.

I wouldn't put it past Vince Gilligan and co. to paw through every little detail they wrote about Saul from BB to make sure it fit.

When does S3 start? Saw a headline that Odenkirk was on Kimmel recently, but didn't click it because of spoiler warning.

Committee to re-elect Saul Goodman is almost certainly a one-off reference to CREEP (Committee to Re-elect the President), Nixon's dirty Watergate laundry.

I'm rewatching BrBa, just watched the Better Call Saul episode. So awesome.

SAUL: I want to be Tom Hagen to your Vito Corleone.

WALT: I'm no Vito Corleone.

SAUL: No ****! Right now, you're Fredo!

creators Peter Gould and Vince Gilligan admit that they did not expect fans to figure out Gus Fring is returning:

We had this—to us—this very bright idea of encoding the words ‘Fring’s Back’ in the episode titles.
And we thought we’d be revealing it maybe sometime over the summer.
I guess we really underestimated the genius and hard work of our fans

So Gus confirmed?

Lol at Gilligan not thinking fans would figure that out. After "757 (or whatever it was) down over ABQ" from season 2 of BrBa he had to figure episode titles would be heavily analyzed.

Saw a TV promo that said Spring 2017, so it appears it will debut later than previous years.
