American Crime Story - The People v. O.J. Simpson American Crime Story - The People v. O.J. Simpson

This starts Tuesday 2nd Feb on FX. I think a lot of people will have heard about this now as it's been advertised quite a bit and is generating a lot of buzz.

If you haven't, it stars Cuba Gooding Jr as O.J., and has a super strong cast, including John Travolta in his first TV role in 20+ years.

I first heard Chuck Klosterman talking on a podcast a month or so back about how entertaining the first six episodes are. I wasn't totally sure if he was saying they were just a great fun (from memory he mentioned Travolta hamming it up), but recent reviews seem to confirm that this is going to be an excellent show. From the IndieWire link:

Before I get to far in, it's important to note that "The People v. O.J. Simpson" is actually good. It's very good, in fact. Through six episodes, it's on track to be one of the best first seasons of television ever made, especially considering the cultural climate surrounding its release.
It also seems this is likely to be the year of O.J.:

So a few weeks back (on a podcast), I mentioned this upcoming FX show, THE PEOPLE VS. OJ SIMPSON, and I said it was awesome. And it is. [1]

But now I’ve seen OJ SIMPSON: MADE IN AMERICA, a five-part documentary that comes out in June on ESPN. It will blow your mind. [2]

When this eventually airs, it will be viewed as the greatest thing ESPN has ever produced. I almost can't believe how revelatory it is. [3]

It's like a Rick Perlstein book, combined with THE STAIRCASE, combined with NFL Films and the last 15 minutes of GIMME SHELTER. [4]

looking forward to this a great deal, but some serious expectations to uphold when dude is claiming 1st 6eps are better than band of brothers which is clearly the GOAT ever made on TV.

Very excited about this. Finished the book which is the primary source material relied upon by the show (Jeffrey Toobin's The Run of His Life) a few weeks ago and it was an utterly fascinating read.

Looking forward to that ESPN doc, and this miniseries looks good too.

Also ESPN 30 for 30 did a great episode on the day of the Bronco Chase. Title is "June 17, 1994".

Can't wait...I was actually called for jury duty on this but wax excused when I said OJ was my favorite player and I was a Bills fan.

I was actually in a business meeting in LA when the chase was going on. Everyone just stopped and watched on TV. It was so surreal.

Loved that story, until I realized, "Oh wait...Dom really IS a Bills fan."

thought it was great.

tons of commercials though. I almost felt bad FFing through all of them. would gladly pay FX a buck an episode (or whatever the advertisers price the eyes at)

I forgot to mention, a couple of things made me cringe:

1) Working in not one but two references to the Kardashian girls.
2) Mark Fuhrman: "My name is Mark Fuhrman. (I'm telling you this even though it has zero relevance to the rest of what I'm about to say.)" <winks at audience>

I mean, be a little more subtle about each of these things and trust the audience.

I dunno, like I said above I thought it was fine, but the book and its much greater depth is more interesting, does greater justice to the reality of this absurd and fascinating sequence of events, and I doubt the show will ever be its equal (even though the trailer gave me a lot of hope that it would). One thing that I'm particularly disappointed by is how thus far the show is making Clark, Cochran, and Darden each out to be a lot more sympathetic and less three-dimensional than how they were portrayed in the book.

It's one episode, give it time!

Pretty damn enthralling.

I remember that whole day in L.A. when reports were that OJ was being charged and that he was turning himself in...and then he disappeared. Everyone assumed he had gone off to kill himself...TVs were on everywhere (the internet was not yet capable of this real-time reporting).

And then the white Bronco. So surreal. It seemed like hours as the cops just followed it, talking to AC.

I was horrified and titillated, that day was like nothing else before or since.

--Schwimmer gets the MVP so far, tho Travolta is awesome, too.

--Came in expecting competence from Lange and Vanatter, and INcompetence from Marcia Clark. I'm 0-for-3 so far.

--Your Subtle Moment from this ep: talking about a case where his client suffered police brutality and no cops would be charged, Cochran says he plans to sue the city, because sometimes money is the only justice you can get.

Hey, I know a case where that happened to a guy who had to sell his Heisman Trophy..

I really enjoyed it.

Having grown up in LA I knew a handful of people involved in the whole fiasco - interested to see how many "other" people they portray in the show

overall i thought it was good. I'm in.

one thing that bothered me - and I'm sure it's accurate to how they spoke - was the constant use of "Juice." Man, they must have called him that 60 times in the episode. it sounded corny every single time.
