PLO DEVIL.

not sure if this has been done before, but as far as my 'search 2p2' skills go, i've not found a thread similar.

i'm wondering what the biggest downswings people have gone through in both big blinds and $ amount, would be cool to hear some stories from not only the nosebleed guys, but also the small-mid stake guy who grind out hundreds of thousands of hands per year.

i'll start, since playing plo it's roughly

-4500bb's/45 buyin's
-downswing is still ever growing, present amount would be about $15k

If losing 45 buyins is $15K for you, then that is certainly not high stakes. Many people on here lose that in one hand of PLO.

You should have looked in bad beats and variance (BBV) before creating this thread, as there are a trillion stories of PLO and other games variance that are told on there.

200 buyins 6 figures I'd roughly guess.

Only played 200k hands of PLO lifetime and I have had an 85 buyin downswing which came out to around 25k

I broke even for my past 1.3M. I play too many tables, tilt too much but still manage to break even. w/e I suck.

Before that I was doing really good, since then I have been playing like trash most of the time.

August 2011 to February 2012, 100 buyins and just shy of $60k under EV in 67k hands. Totally crushed confidence in my game and my motivation to grind, hence the ridic low amount of hands.

I'm lucky to have recovered now but having mixed feelings about how I handled the whole thing. Part of me thinks it's wise not to have played a lot when I clearly wasn't at my best. Autopiloting, spiraling in a negative mindset, "What's the point, I'm gonna lose anyway. All in." The other, more dominant, part of me thinks these kinds of things is what separates the professionals from the amateurs, i.e. being strong enough to keep the head fresh and grind through it. If I wouldn't have lost motivation and kept my head clear, I would have made a lot more money. It's not like I spent my time away from poker during that downswing doing productive things.

I think using things like dollar and bb downswings is a bad way to look at it. I think you should look at a bigger sample of all your hands and see how long of a break even stretch you are on in BB's is a better indicator.

the number one favorite site to get perspective on both up and downswings, on sheer endless break even wastelands or just a glimpse in what life could be like if id hit my "one times" just ONE TIME !!!

CZI 100 buyins wow over what time frame? Also what stakes and how low a stake did you drop while losing 100 buyins.

he lost less than 4 buyins (if you only look at bb)...but did an awesome job keeping ev line going steadily up despite gross runbad.

Yeah I suppose you're right. It's about 100k hands over a 600k sample where I make very few bbs. Looking at the big picture and realizing how relatively insignificant the downswing was, was one of the few things that prevented me from losing my sanity during this stretch.



That sucks but it shouldn't be a problem if you have a solid winrate. Sure, missing out on the extra cash blows, but you should still be making good money running 2.5bb under EV. I just checked cause you made me curious, during my downswing I was running 15bb under.



I mentioned it in the post, it's a 6 month time frame. It's everything from 1/2 to 25/50. I didn't really have to drop down cause I'm well rolled for midstakes, so I just ditched 10/20+ for a while. Early february I moved down to 1/2 though to rebuild my game and regain confidence, and that worked out very well. I was back at my normal stakes within a week. Heater helped, obviously.

113k hands in 2 months, since I started playing on this rigged xxx site; the vast majority was at 1/2 and 2/4

I just wonder: Who are the ppl who run good in PLO

175 BI. 7 figures. I was probably not playing winning poker in those games for a while.

There is some truly sickening stuff here. Does anyone ever post graphs running way above all-in EV? If it's possible to run that bad, inversely shouldn't some people be running as good? Or are sites truly rigged towards donks who don't post in strategy forums?

You guys realize this is a horribly unproductive thread right? Before a bunch of people start bumping it I'm just gunna go ahead and vote: Mods PLZ close and lock thread. We have BBV and the BBV thread, where people who dont want to read discussions about BIGGEST DOWNSWING can avoid them while still enjoying the rest of the subforum.

Why ask for a thread to be locked if you don't like don't read it.

id be interested in your average standard deviation. if you were winning in these games slightly lets say 1bb/100, then youd need about 200 bb/100 SD to get a 175 downswing. thats pretty sick...
unless oc it gets to you and throws your game off.

thats imo the most impressive feature of CZIs graph: eventhough he said his confidence was down the drain, his ev line was steadily rising. meaning he still played good while getting raped. kudos!

How do you know? Maybe he was flopping top sets all the time.

November, 2010 - January, 2011, 130 BIs in 70K hands, -$65K, 2/4 to 5/10, mix of sites but mostly Stars, though half of the amount lost came from 5K hands at Entraction, never setting my foot there again

I had another $50K downswing which hurted gazillion times more, cause it came in only 7K hands at 5/10 at Stars.

In addition, I had a 550K hands breakeven stretch during my SNE grind last year. Ship the 60K in rakeback for that period though

On the other hand, I've had two 100K+ uspwings and several in the 50K+ range, so can't complain too much

I see a 50 BIs upswing at the beginning of this graph and a 30 BIs downswing towards the end.

Just to be clear - running X BIs under EV does not represent a downswing, losing money does.
