A meaningful one? Probably. I'm trying to be helpful here -- your previous post that the stock market is a zero sum game pretty much means any opinions you have about it aren't going to be useful at all. I'd definitely recommend cruising around BFI and reading some of the basic investing threads.

The average equity investor over the past 20 years made about 4% annual returns. So, yes. (below market average returns, but much better than a CD -- or gambling)

This is exactly what donks say before they ask, "but how much did you lose?"

Same question about gold investment or currency investment (only buying a currency without having any clue about what you're doing) would be more interesting and I'd call it either "gambling" (or "diversification" at best) if you do that without having any clue about what you're doing.

But investing in the stock market (on any ETF or Index Tracker) is not an EV0 gamble... Must be call "investment" then. It's not the same as buying some JPY (Japanese Yen) without any information or rational expectations ("knowing the market", as you said) and hope to earn some $.

Could very well be but I'm really liking some stocks, like Nordea for example.

It's obvious that Europe has to get worse before it can get better. I still like these dips as long-term buying opportunities...there's so much money already in government and corporate bonds that when that money starts flowing into stocks (yes, might take long), the stocks are gonna soar.

So it's different from poker in that more people win than lose? And that people are just as good at investment as they think they are?

4% annual returns sounds like it's less than inflation.

Truely in awe of some of the comments in here towards property, how many of you guys against investing in property are actually homeowners???

IMO ITT there's a significant lack of experience with a) property b) the London market. Gav if I were you I would get some differen views from ppl who have recently bought a first time BTL or residential within the m25 area.

Truly in awe of your lack of reading comprehension skills, since it wasn't gav asking for advice, and nor was the query from someone investing within the M25.

And why do you have to be a homeowner to have an opinion on the property market?

Re: **July LC Thread**

what comments are stupid do you think?

I'm very aware the decision I am making might not be the best way to make money but my life happiness is way more important to me and I certainly don't think its the stupidest thing I can be doing with my money.

Read the guys post. Its completely different to Gav. Buying in cash for somewhere you're going to live is completely different to buying with a mortgage to rent as an investment(outside of london too).

Luls I was just skimming thread on phone so didnt notice the initial post from yar... So apols for any distress on that front!!

Ultimately the south performs much more differently then the rest of country, moreso within m25, more so the closer u get to central... And if u look at the affluent property performance since recession u'll be surprised. I actually think u / yara are making a wise moves getting involved now. Just wanted to voice a diff opinion to those that I skimmed thru. I don't post here much but like to flick thru every now and then

I was, yes I was high on my estimates, with everyone else.

Asia/Pacific numbers scare me quite a bit. Want to look deeper at the region to see if this is product cycle or macro economic forces at work...or if Apple is feeling the effects of Android. Hopefully, it's not the latter.

I think it is very good for a poker player to invest in a nice house, done it myself too. Its something that has a lot of value to you in the rest of your life, even if you somehow ends up loosing all your cash, you still have your house. We take so much risk everyday on the poker table, i like the rest of my money very at ease and with few risks, so on a savings account and in a house.

^^

friend of mine who's into analyzing smart phone market told me that Samsung Galaxy S3 is selling like crazy, so that might be it....together with the long-ish pause waiting for iphone5.

and their guidance might have been a bit too glorious...now they took guidance down quite a bit if i understood it correctly.
