i think ovechkin would do that a lot last year, but at the same time there were whole PP possessions which he looked like he didn't want the puck at all. he'd basically stay back and get out of the way of green's point, or lazily swing down low and swing back to the blue line.
but i agree with you that it's actually quite annoying. i've started watching some KHL games, and there's a lot of that going on, especially with speedy guys, but to me it looks a bit like a gimmick. like you are trying to distract the defender, even if it's obvious that there's no way you can make any sort of move to the inside or down low. i don't know, but i don't see that strategy working. if you can make the defender take his eye off of you, you can sometimes pull off a brilliant goal, but if PK defense is solid, you are just taking yourself out of the play and making it a 4-on-4. if you need a rest, sit down, don't skate around there like brian boitano hoping someone falls for it.
