Ya, Edwin is a very good defensive 1st baseman. He used to have a good glove for a third baseman, just couldn't throw.

14th by UZR and 12th by fangraphs Def with min 300 innings at 1B. He's not awful but I wouldn't go as far as "very good." It's not a valuable enough skill that you're paying for it in FA compared to his value as a pure DH.

Yeah, still a pretty small sample, but he's trended upwards each year since moving from 3b and has had positive UZR grades in each of the last two seasons. Seems he's always had a decent enough glove, and simply removing his need to throw the ball has improved things to a degree. Still, he's not even playing half a season's worth of innings at 1B so it's kind of hard to say anything with any real meaning is happening.

It's unfortunate that both Edwin and the Jays misjudged the 1B/DH market. I know Morales has great batted ball stats from last year, but that contract looks like the contract you begrudgingly sign when you know someone will offer Edwin 25mm/per. Both the Jays and Edwin were wrong, no one is offering him that much money. The Jays are stuck with Kendry and Edwin is prob gonna get less than 4/80.

Also I was neutral on the Smoak contract at the time, but it's really handcuffed us and I hate it now.

Can the Jays trade Morales or is that against the CBA?

Seems like the timeline is
1. Jays offer Edwin 4/80
2. Edwin turns it down.
3. Jays sign Morales/Pearce effectively giving up on Edwin.
4. Edwin realizes 4/80 was the best offer he got, but it's too late and he settles w/ Cleveland.

maybe if we keep filling the stadium every game for a few more years we'll be able to compete with big market teams like the Indians to retain our free agents

It's just ridiculous what this clown show of a GM Shapiro is doing, He is a rebuilding GM that can get good value, but eventually you need to make a run and AA knew that and did it. Jays would be competitive for at least a couple more years, but now our title chances took a huge step back. Rogers was pulling in so much extra cash these past couple of years, but by being dumb and not spending they are going to lose so much again. Welcome back to the late 90s, early 2000s attendance.

I just don't understand how an organization can run on a 'budget' in this day and age, all contracts should be used as a factor for % chance on playoff run/ playoff make and the estimated added revenue from those runs. I highly doubt Morales and Pearce can come close to giving what EE could have. Congrats you got a 6MM player for 3MM, pat yourself on the back you morans; paying 20MM for a 20MM player helps this team and the business so much more

I actually like what we've done, not committed to old guys and saved our money for our plethora of guys that will see massive salary growth over the coming seasons while gaining draft picks and getting younger.

CMON BIGT YOUVE BEEN IN THIS THREAD LONG ENOUGH TO NOT BE PART OF THE SHATKINS/ROGERS ARE CHEAP CONSPIRACY.

DO YOU WANT THE JAYS TO TURN INTO THE RUBEN AMARO PHILLIES? DO YOU NOT REMEMBER VERNON WELLS?

LETTING E5 GO IS UNFORTUNATE, BUT THE BEST MOVE IN THE LONG RUN.

YOU THINK THINGS ARE BAD NOW?

THERE IS A VERY GOOD CHANCE THE JAYS COULD HIT THE RESET BUTTON COME JULY. SO BE PREPARED FOR IT.
