The Braves have announced a one-year deal with free agent righty R.A. Dickey. The contract comes with a $8MM guarantee, per Jon Heyman of Fan Rag (via Twitter). That includes a $500K buyout of a 2018 option, which the team can exercise for $8MM.

Morales is the guy who broke his leg on that walkoff celly and has never been the same since, yeah?

looks fairly mediocre, but maybe Skydome park effects will help ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

also a switch hitter it seems

well, that should give him a good shot at the WS...lol.

Actually, I feel bad for Dickey. Not his fault that he was on the wrong end of the trade. He never complained and was class the whole time he was here.

I wish him good luck.

I'd recommend reading Dickey's book if you've not yet.

what's the deal with 7/22 on this Cuban guy? Travis and Tull get injured a lot, is he meant to replace Barney and Goins and eventually become a starter?

Will probably start in AA. He also worked out in CF so he can probably contribute at 5 positions. Super utility guy. Think they'll want his bat to get some reps in the minors before he sees major league pitching though

His stock has fallen quite a bit in the last few months. Thought is that he may end up in a corner OF, but seems to be athletic enough to be serviceable defensively in other spots. Eric Longenhagen posted a scouting report on Fangraphs today or yesterday or whatever and it wasn't exactly glowing. To wit:

Quote:
The market for his services was entirely open for all teams and and he got just over $3 million in average annual value over seven years. Yasmany Tomas, by comparison, got $68.5 million over six years as a 24-year-old in 2014. I think the deal reinforces the corner-first utility-man scouting reports and one executive mentioned Sean Rodriguez as a comp for the tools and skills, if not the body. Potential 23-year-old stars don’t get $22 mil on the open market.
It's a pretty reasonable fit though, considering the Jays are a club with a pretty light upper minor league system, and 7/22M is a pretty thin commitment spread out over time. He hit .344/.407/.560 last year in the Cuban league as a 22 year old, while playing mostly SS. To give some context to that, Jose Abreu hit .345/.481/.617 as a 25 year-old in his last year in Cuba, before coming stateside and winning ROY in '13. That's obviously incredibly crude, as it was 4 years ago and I have no idea how the league compares now, but he's the last person to play in both leagues with any meaningful sample of AB's so whatever.

Deeper look at Cuban position players since Cespedes/Abreu. This won't exactly be pretty.

Erisbel Arruebarenna sucks. http://www.baseball-reference.com/re...d=arrueb000bar
Career .276/.327/.423 in Cuba from age 17-22, now he's just toiling around in the minors, but he's a pretty decent fielder so he could theoretically work out. 5y/$25MM.

Yasmany Tomas got 6y/$69.5MM and should probably be a DH, but he's playing in the OF instead so he's been below replacement level despite hitting 31HR's this year. He's a career 290/.345/.504 in the Cuban league, also age 17-22. Might have value if he can get traded to a team that doesn't have Paul Godschmidt or a pitcher batting instead of a DH.

Rusney Castillo got $72.5MM and has done approximately nothing in the bigs the last two years. He's almost 30 with very few contributions on his record.

Hector Olivera got like 5y/$55MM and has provided literally nothing, despite carving out .322/.406/.500 in Cuba through age 28.

Alexander Guerrero 4/$25.5MM 2 years ago, got released this year. (Is he the guy that bit someone's ear off or something?)

Puig was amazing for 2 years but he seems to be terrible now. Dodgers got 12+ WAR from him so far so 7y/42MM seems like reasonable value, but there's been little value there since 2014.

Couple nice ones though, at least so far. Aledmys Diaz was like 4/19MM and he was an all-star this year. Jury's still out on Yulieski Gurriel and Yoan Moncada. Guillermo Heredia was signed for like 400k and seems like a decent 4th OF/defensive replacement type. Dariel Alvarez signed for 800k and probably won't provide much value. Same with Henry Urriuta.

Alex Guerrero had has ear bitten by Miguel Olivo. But he still sucks. You're probably bullish on Arruebarenna, if anything; the Dodgers thought he gave so few ****s about playing baseball that they found him in violation of his contract.

The bubble has definitely popped on Cuban players, which we're seeing in this Gurriel deal. Seems like a good time to swoop in.

Brett Cecil is rumored to be headed to St. Louis, $30.5 million over 4 years.

I'm sad to see him go, but man, good luck with that deal. My word!

Holliday to NYY. EE suitors are shrinking. Ken Rosenthal believes that the Jays 4/80MM offer has been taken off the table. EE intends to sign at the winter meetings.

Should have accepted the offer we made, you know, the one that was a record for DHs.

And don't give me this Edwin is 1B nonesense, he's a ****ing DH.
