Re: St. Louis Cardinals - 'Ship #11 Bitches

Am I the only one that's kinda mad at the Cardinals FO over the handling of the Pujols situation?

I read somewhere that 1WAR= $5mil(projected over the next 10yrs) in payroll. By that measure the angels are betting Pujols will put up 51 WAR over 10 yrs. The Cards were only willing to offer a contract worth 42WAR over 10 yrs.

If that projection is accurate, is it really worth .9 wins/ yr to let possibly the GOAT hitter walk over concerns he might be on the decline. I'm clearly biased because I'm 24 and Pujols has been there for like 70% of my Cardinal loving life(yrs 0-5 don't count although there are pictures of me in a Cards jumper at 4mths old during the 87 series).

To me it's worth .9 wins/yr to see Pujols get his milestones as a Cardinal.

If you deflate the avg of 1 WAR to 3.8 mil(my own estimate probly too low but just to prove a point). Pujols put up 334,000,000 worth of production while being paid ~$110,000,000. So the Cards come up $224,000,000 ahead there.

Pujols would have to put up 6 WAR(TOTAL) over the life a 10/yr contract to consider his time w/ the Cards mutually beneficial. Pujols has put up 88WAR in 11 seasons.

Pujols, Aaron, and Ruth are the only players to put up 80+ WAR in their first 11 years. Ryan Howard(5/125) has fewer than 30 WAR in his career.

Just saying don't compare Pujols to Gibby, Brock, or Musial(there was no free agengy until late 70's early 80's). Musial himself said he wouldv'e left STL for more money if given the oppurtunity.

There's a whole lot wrong with what you've got going on there. I mean ffs why are you factoring past value/pay at all? That's really weird and serves no purpose in evaluating the decision of the FO. And why in the world are you referencing the awful Ryan Howard contract as if it has ANY bearing on the Cards should or shouldn't do?

Nowhere in your write-up have you given any evidence of the decision to allow him to walk being worse than the decision to re-sign him, which surely is what you're asking us, no?

Re: St. Louis Cardinals - 'Ship #11 Bitches

IF it is really true that the organization only offered him 5 years and IF it is really true that he would have worked with us and signed a lesser contract had he not been offended by the 5 year offer, I can be a little upset with the organization for not handling it better. It would have been nice to keep him for less than he is worth (or rather, what he could get elsewhere). I don't know any of that to be true, so I can't be mad.

My heart is still sad, but my head says the Cards are healthier for the future. Kinda like when that sexy chick I liked decided we were just really good friends. She has the herpes anyway.

Sounds like Oswalt is going to join the cards. Apparently a lot of this season is going to depend on players with injury problems not getting injured.

Our plan of acquiring as many former Astros as possible is proceeding nicely.

Re: St. Louis Cardinals - 12 in '12

I know im a slow pony to this but:

I've been a lifelong cardinal fan. I grew up just outside of St. Louis. When my family was young and starting off(poor) I'd have nothing to really watch but Cardinal games. I grew up watching this team.

When i moved to MN, i still tried to watch as many games as possible, but it's tough sometimes in a different state. I still remember watching Pujols with big mac during the home run race and thinking damn this dude is good.

When I went to college I was living in a fraternity during the red sox/cardinals world series. I was the only guy in the house(out of 40-50 of us) that was rooting for the cardinals. Most just wanted to see boston RANG, but imo they could wait a year.

The 2006 run was insane and one of the best things ive ever seen. I have a friend that's a die hard Tigers fan so it made it even better.

This last year tops all of it. As a birthday gift my wife got me tickets to my first ever cardinal game. I never went as a kid because my parents weren't really into sports and I was the only one out of my brothers truly interested. I went to the June series of Cards vs. Cubs(if you're going to your first game, it HAS to be cards/cubs imo). It was the series where pujols jacked game winning home runs and we swept the series. Ended up buying an albert pujols shirt for the game because he was fast becoming my favorite cardinal ever(Ozzie is still my favorite).

Even this long after him signing to the angels, i really dont know what to think. I understand that he made the right choice, that we couldnt offer him that kind of money, and that playing in the AL as he gets older is a much better option when he declines, but for as magical as this last year has been i've just been confused. Im not mad at pujols at all, I just am disappointed that something so amazing can disappear so quickly.

it's kinda similar to the bulls last title run imo. they win the 'ship, are still competitive, but then jordan/pippen/jackson all leave and chicago is in disarray for years.

I'm nervous that that is going to happen to us. The rational side of me feels that if we are healthy, this team will be better on paper than they were last year(we had loads of injuries last year). Im not saying we'll title, im just saying from top to bottom we're more formidable. The other side of me is worried that so much change so quickly is going to be too much to overcome.

but yeah, cliffs is just that ive never been so happy for the cardinals and then been in sheer disbelief in such a short period of time before.

I'm not a Cards fan, but I'd like to know what makes Yadi clutch. I also don't watch Baseball religiously, but I'm trying to get back to the way I used to be, just curious. I tried Googling, but came up with nothing. I also tried a few reference sources, but nothing. Any help would be appreciated, thank you.
