So am I. The Jets won by seven points in the playoffs last year and they totally outplayed the Pats and the Pats won by 21 and DIDN'T totally outplay the Jets? I don't think that makes sense.

Listen, it's an argument that I think is going to go round and round. The difference between you and me is I always err on the side of optimism for my team and you always err on the side of pessimism.

let's all just be happy about how soft the rest of the regular season schedule is

You're putting too much stock in one game. Do I really need to list all the games where a clearly inferior team outplays its opponent? I don't deny that the Pats clearly outplayed the Jets in game 1, and they at the very least made a ton fewer mistakes IN new york in game 2, but we have 7 other games for each team to help determine each team's strength.

I think the Pats are a better team, but just not heads and shoulders better.
When did I reference only one game? It sure looked to me like I referenced 4 games.

It's not that I am always pessimistic, it's just that I try not to just focus on the score, because there is just so much variance in scores. So I look at other things like ypp and turnovers, because those are better gauges of a team's true strength.

Completely outplayed was a poor choice of words to describe the playoff game. I guess I thought it was more of a beatdown. Very slightly outplayed?

we were talking about the steelers.

as for the jets, i don't know why you care about what happened last year. sure, we may be able to glean SOME information about it as there hasn't been a ton of turnover, but even the colts made the playoffs last year.

we're not bickering at all. we're engaged in a very civil debate.

All very fair other than the turnovers part. Not sure if you misspoke but I think turnovers is one of the worst gauges of a team's true strength although it does clearly mean something.

so sunday, jets and pats had very similar ypp. turnovers were pretty much the difference in the game.

My Man Dr K (having his best season ever since I started following him--check out those W/L numbers!) has put the Pats back on top of the Packers in his Power Ratings (we had slipped to #2 after the Pittsburgh loss; interestingly, he has NYJ at #6).

So yeah, it's time for every post ITT to say, "Rah rah, go Pats!"

(Looking at those numbers, what's the line going to be when the Colts come to town?)

I don't get Buffalo. They played incredibly well early in the season and just completely self-destructed.

I realize that turnovers are a HUGE indication of the outcome of a particular game. However, they are not a huge indication of the strength of a certain team. That's what I was saying.

I'll go with -17 vs Colts. -14.5 this week vs Chiefs with Tyler Plako (palko?

yeah and it's not even a results based thing where they were getting Wins but everyone knew they were playing bad, like Denver 6-0 a few years ago. there are actually playing good, and have fallen off a cliff

I agree mostly. So based on ypp, the two teams are super close, do you disagree? Give an edge to NE for doing it at new york.

I'm not sure I understand ypp to comment to be honest.

I can see that, since we're still under the shadow of the PIT and NYG losses.

But if we tear apart KC and PHL, I'm hoping for a -20, though I know it's a pipe dream.

what was the biggest spread the team's ever had?

i seem to recall either 22.5 or 23.5 vs. the eagles during the 18-1 season

edit: according to google, the game vs. the eagles had the pats -24 jfc

10-6 against the spread that year

The pats are -14.5 against the Chiefs this week? Christ. I just can't imagine, in today's NFL, taking a line of that magnitude.

Those '07 Pats spreads got more and more ridiculous, presumably because they kept beating them. I think that team opened up either 9-0 or 10-0 vs. the spread, which is arguably more impressive than what they did on the field. Vegas couldn't keep up. Totally insane. Of course things changed quickly after that.

I meant to say "were close" not "are close" to suggest that if you look just at ypp (a decentish indicator) in last week's game, the two teams played fairly close. That's pretty much the whole crux of my "game was much closer than the score indicated" argument.

and that Eagles team wasn't even bad! in fact they were above average, finishing 8-8, 11th in point differential, 10th in DVOA

IIRC that game was the genesis of the Pats' "blueprint" meme, which continues to this day.

Let's take a little step back and praise all that be the Gronk:

http://www.grantland.com/blog/the-tr...ops-of-week-10

Quote:
New England Patriots 37, New York Jets 16

Fabulous: Rob Gronkowski. The Jets have some of the best linebackers and cornerbacks in the league, but they really struggle to cover Gronkowski. How bad of a mismatch was Gronkowski? The Jets actually moved Darrelle Revis off of Wes Welker to cover Gronkowski at times during the second half. The only other tight end in the league that Revis sees reps against is Antonio Gates. Gronkowski was 8-of-11 for 113 yards with two touchdowns, and if not for a stray footstep in the end zone, it would have been three. What he's doing as a red zone threat is unprecedented; teams know the Patriots are going to go to him and still don't seem to have a prayer of stopping him. Gronkowski is now two touchdowns away from becoming just the second tight end in NFL history to score 10 or more touchdowns in back-to-back seasons, a distinction he will also solely share with Gates. And keep in mind that no tight end has ever been able to score more than 10 touchdowns in a season more than three times in his career. Gronkowski's about to do it twice in his first two seasons. This could be the best tight end ever, folks.

Tight ends are taking on a bigger role in today's NFL offenses, though, rookie Jimmy Graham has more yards and TDs than Gronk.
