I wasn't. It's jarring at first, but then I realize I completely trust the guy in charge.

He can cut Brady and Gronk tomorrow, and I'd be fine with it. Swear to God.

he could hold out from the Pats but he has no leverage. he's a backup who won't be playing unless Brady gets hurt. so it would be a bizarre move. he can either sit on the bench and get paid or sit at home and not get paid.

Could he holdout from team who trades for him?

I assume he'll have already agreed to the framework of a long-term deal with the team that trades for him, & if not he won't hold out because he'll want to get to his free agency year ASAP.

The Patriots want Garoppolo to stay in New England for a long time.

Patriots intend to keep QB Jimmy Garoppolo

Why would a team want to give him a long term deal instead of seeing if he crashes like Brock Osweiller before giving him a huge deal?

Because otherwise all they are buying is one year & that's not going to be worth that much.

If you're giving enough to make it worth the Pats while, you really ought to have enough conviction to put a ring on it.

The weird thing about Osweiler is there were 8 games of tape of him being not that good for teams to see before choosing to sign him.

Just like they set a price on every player they are thinking of retaining or buying, they probably set a price on every player they are thinking of selling... and nobody is meeting it, at least yet. I'm in favor of keeping JG another year if only to maintain the status quo. Another year to evaluate where Brady is at age 40 while keeping JG is a win-win in my book. That also gives BB to evaluate things over the course of the year as well. Anything can happen in the NFL.

Gonna get Revis back super cheap and he will win DPOY probably. That would be the natural order of the Universe.

Almost any non-crude "Roger That!" will be good.

So if they give Butler $4m next year, then a team that offers him a contract after this next season would have to give the Pats a first round draft pick? Is that correct?

No.

Assume they put a 1st round tender on him now, which is worth something around $4mm.

If he signs an offer from another team, Pats can either match the offer and keep him, or let him go (and that means gone now) and get that teams 1st round pick next year.

I feel like Ryan complements Butler so well. It gives us the tall corner and fast corner combination with McCourty over the top. This is a passing league. Every championship that we have won has been with an elite secondary. Think about that.

LB is a brutal position and we seem to always find guys who step into it.

If it were up to me, Keep Ryan/Butler, let Hightower walk.

I also feel like we really need a WR. Edelman has been absolutely abused the last couple of years now and I don't know how much longer he will hold up and Gronk is always injured. With Bennett almost definitely leaving, we are pretty thin.

Colts to trade Dwayne Allen, draft pick to Pats for 4th-round pick

Quote:
...The Colts agreed to send Allen and a sixth-round pick to New England for a Patriots fourth-round pick, per league sources.

...Before a 2014 game between the Patriots and Colts, coach Bill Belichick had high praise for Allen, saying, "I've been really impressed with Allen's blocking. I think he's one of the best blocking tight ends we'll see."

Allen re-signed with the Colts last offseason with a four-year, $29 million contract. He finished with 35 receptions for 406 yards and six touchdowns while playing in 14 games in 2016.

Ha Felger and Mazz were just saying that he's a pass catching TE not much of a blocker. Not sure why I started listening to them again.

Im pretty happy with the trade. Obviously its a downgrade from Bennett but if Gronk can stay healthy it shouldnt matter too much.

Looks like a fairly for TE's in free agency so getting a competent #2 in return for moving back in the draft ~60 spots is a decent move.

As far as their own free agents. The 2 i really want back are Hightower and Branch. On top of that I think someone will offer sheet Butler and if they do i really hope Pats match it. Losing him would suck big time.

Pats sign Gilmore, now talk of trading Butler (for Cooks even). Interesting turn of events. I like Butler but have never been fully sold on his eliteness-probably because I'm taking a casual view of things and judging him only when he appears on the telecast, ignoring that the fact that his rarely appearing on TV means that he's doing his job as a corner.

Hogan and Mitchell played well towards the end of the year, but Edelman is getting up there in age and takes so many hits that looking for receiver help is probably smart

The first round tender is like charity for Butler? Is anyone really gonna give a first just to sign the guy? That seems absurd.
