yeah he was def tripped from behind, explaining why KR was able to run free for so long. though with the frequency of injuries on ST i'd question why your now #1 CB is in there. fitting that the first D-holding call in OT was on his replacement.
i don't think the challenge decision was awful. even the vikings players thought it was a catch in real time, so you can't blame refs for ruling it a catch initially. then video evidence doesn't conclusively show ball touching the ground though i'd say there's a decent chance it did. it was just absurd because i've watched numerous saints games where they've actually got challenges reversed WITHOUT conclusive evidence... more the kind of "well yeah it probably touches the ground there" sentiment. no way we were going to get that kind of reasoning @ superdome there.
it is just way too ****ing fitting that the yahoo! headline wasn't "Saints outgun Vikings to go to Superbowl" or "Saints D shines in victory". It was "Blunders send Saints to first super bowl"... that's right. The vikings didn't get outplayed... it was their own blunders that allowed the opposing team to advance passively by default. this is everything v fans have come to know and expect.
at this point i can only think "why let a bunch of tards like chilly ruin my mood for an entire day and haunt me occasionally the rest of my life? why not just swear off football and channel all that wasted energy into something to benefit you directly. you will be a much happier person, etc etc" but it's useless. i'll always be addicted to this masochism.

Re: Minnesota Vikings - Fire Chilly
I agree PI call was horrible. But the reception looked good. You never see the ball touch the ground and it seems like he gets it under control before his torso goes to the ground. Certainly not enough to overturn.
Lots of crappy mistakes on both sides and ugly calls by the refs. Chilly playing for 51-yd field goal seemed pretty bad to me at first. But the more I thought about it I softened my stance. The Vikes were running the ball with pretty good success, and Saints were tired, so it's not like those two runs were only guaranteed to get a few yards. Plus we all know what Favre is capable of when it comes to interceptions. Also Longwell is pretty lock solid.
12-men in the huddle is insanity though. Whoever's fault that is made the worst play of the day.

Re: Minnesota Vikings - Fire Chilly
I just watched the KO return over & over again in slow motion. It was not a trip. I can see why it would look like one seeing it at full speed, but there was space between the Saint who looked like he tripped him and Griffin. Griffin started to fall on his own then got kind of pushed down by the second guy.
I was in rage over the whole game at the time, so the "catch" that didnt get reversed sent me over the edge. It was pretty close, but I still contend it was the wrong call.
For me, this game was far less painful than 98 because of my expectations. Much of that is due to chilly being the coach. It was almost hard to believe we should win the NFC with this idiot calling the shots. This team seemed maybe a little better than the 01 disaster.
This game reminds me more of what happened in 1975. Anyone else old enough to have seen that ****?

As a Chiefs fan who had to grapple with these questions for the entire 90s. I feel your pain. All I can say is it's probably like getting butt-raped in prison. The first one is the worst, after that they start to run together. (I'm assuming)

I thought the holding call that preceded it was weak too, but I might just suck at rules.
Also thought JA got held on the PI play.
Oh well, pretty standard finish. You knew the fail would have to be epic and at least partially on the Refs' shoulders.

The head coach has to be ultimately responsible for this. If they cant get something like this right at such an important time, especially right after a ****ing timeout, what the **** are you doing coaching in the NFL?!

I doubt that. Usually that is going to be the OC's fault or maybe even a position coach.

I thought that holding call was marginal, but acceptable.
I didnt notice Allen getting held, but youre probably right, and it would be par for the course with all this other ****.
Standard finish - yeah. I didnt know it, but I felt it coming.
****
suzzer - its sad, but they dont all run together. I remember all of them since 1972. 1975, 1987, 1998, 2001 and this year were the worst endings where we didnt wind up in the super bowl. All the super bowls were big flaming bags of dog-****.

Re: Minnesota Vikings - Fire Chilly
just rewatched the vikings on offense (god idk why) but Favre was really off all day, there were so many bad balls for incompletions (quite a few of them on shorter 10 yard type passes) that were thrown to open receivers
can't wait to listen to PA tomorrow morning

Can't agree more. Didn't even really think the end of reg int was that big of a deal, incomplete is same thing really and saying "why didn't he scramble?" when he's 40 with a busted ankle and hasn't scrambled all season is pretty lol. But w/e.
Zygi doesn't make a move I don't think til the 2011 failure though At least we won't hear the "new stadium" bs too much, if they went to the sb hennepin county residents would be getting out the lube.

Re: Minnesota Vikings - Fire Chilly
DPI was an awful call.
The holding on Asher was a ticky tacky call on third down in the NFCCG in OT. It's really unfortunate, because he made an outstanding play on the ball to break it up afterwards.
All three of the challenges were plays that could have maybe should have been ruled differently on the field, but had none of them could have been overturned.
I would suggest Tyrell catch the ball, but just not dropping the ball when it is right in your hands would be acceptable.
FIRE CHILLY. FAVRE RETIRE.
Draft interior linemen and dbs.
I think that is all.

Come on, get serious, this is just recency bias. 1998 was way, way way worse than this. This was just sort of meh. 2001 was worse than this, tbh.

Of all the lessons and skills that poker has taught me, this has got to be the most important. blah blah its just sports meowchow, but sports is important to me and this was a tough loss. Poker helps.

First, anyone complaining about the reffing isn't complaining about "total penalty yards." They are almost exclusively complaining about the series of 5 consecutive calls going the Saints way in the last possession.
Second, what makes you think there is something inherent in the way the Saints play that makes it likely they'll get more penalty yards? I'd say if anything it is the opposite, solely because Favre is the Vikings QB and tends to draw a lot of roughing calls. I don't know how to find a penalty yards vs. stat but the Saints had more penalty yards/game than the Vikings this season (51.1/game to 46.6/game)
Finally, I don't often find myself defending Childress because I haven't liked him since the day they announced him, but what did he do that was so awful? Yes, settling for a 50yd FG is lolbad but something like 95% of Div. 1A and up football coaches do the same thing. He put a gameplan together that had them in position to beat the Saints despite losing the turnover battle 5-1. They held the supposed best offense in the NFL to 257 total yards and gained 475. All on the road.
It was a pretty impressive game imo. The "luck" things (penalties and turnovers) didn't go their way and they made a couple mistakes, but you win a huge percentage of the time you outplay a team like that.
