Re: Minnesota Vikings - Fire Chilly

Randy was the single most important player on that team, yes. But it seems pretty clear to me, at this point in his career, that he adds more to a good offense than he does to an average one. And I mean that relative to other great WRs, because that is somewhat true for basically everyone.

Know what is also crazy about '98 that I never knew until just now? The 49ers tied the Vikings in yards/play on offense that year (6.2), had more total yards on offense (6800 to 6264) and more offensive TDs (60 to 58).

The biggest differences between the two teams?

The Vikings went 35/35 on FGs while the 49ers went just 18/27.
The 49ers lost 15 fumbles to the Vikings 4!
The Vikings had 5 defensive TDs and 1 special teams TD to the 49ers 1 special teams TD.

That 49ers offense featured Jerry Rice, TO, JJ Stokes and Garison Hearst in his god-mode year. He ran for 1570 yards at 5.1/carry and had 535 yards receiving. He destroyed his ankle in their first playoff game and had to sit out two full seasons before he played again. In '01 at age 30 he came back and ran for 1200 yards, had 347 yards receiving and went to the pro bowl for his second straight season, only 3 years apart.

i don't know if i buy that randy is a "good-offense" player. he's a freak who requires an offense to adapt in order to get full value from him. billick/cunningham were really good at using him-they were willing to be unorthodox. same for brady/belichick et al.

He is a freak but his most dangerous skill is that he's the best deep threat ever, which requires a solid line and qb to take advantage of.

Re: Minnesota Vikings - Fire Chilly

true. good pass protection and a QB with a good deep ball seem like the two most important abilities for a team to fully utilize moss. and while cunningham was not a great QB at that point in his career, he did throw one of the best deep balls i've ever seen.

on the other hand, culpepper was a much more talented passer but did not have a pretty deep ball and was pretty stubborn and left a lot of moss unused imo. edit: and he also didn't have as good a line

It didnt hurt to have a hall of fame receiver lined up opposite him either. And a pro bowl RB. The QB was league MVP that year.

Without that line, what happened in 98' would have been much less impressive.

i wonder if after favre owned childress he decided to exact revenge by benching mckinnie in favor of an even worse LT so peppers could mutilate favre even worse?

all i can gather is we do not play well on grass on the road on primetime... that doesn't bode well for MNF. if vikes can roll i'll feel a little better about our chances but obv if we lose gg season imo.

Re: Minnesota Vikings - Fire Chilly

MIN loses out to go 11-5
AZ beats GB and is 11-5
Philly beats Dallas to go 12-4

That would mean:

1. Saints
2. Philly (12-4)
3. AZ (11-5) head to head tiebreak
4. MIN (11-5)
5. GB (10-6) head to head
6. DAL (10-6)

GB at MIN first round

Cannot meet in the first round any other way. Can meet in second round if MIN gets bye.

Here you guys really should get ready....

The only thing the Vikes have to worry about two weeks from today is who to draft..

At this point I'm just hoping we don't pull a 41-0 in the playoffs again, and at least can retain some dignity on the way out.
