Re: Vikings 2009 Thread Fire Chilly
The Vikings have had a problem with getting stuffed on runs way too often for three seasons now. Their best year under Childress was '06 when they were 18th in stuffed rank.
I really didn't expect things to get worse under Favre. Either our run game is predictable or teams are still loading up to stop the run thinking they are better off taking their chances with Favre than AP.
Well, that or we have a bunch of maulers and run a zone blocking scheme and they can't consistently get to their assignments but when they all do they dominate.
Or some combination of the two.

wasn't sincere in wanting him fired. just my way of expressing rage.

definitely looks like something's wrong with their schemes. every run play is peterson running into two of his blockers and we can only hope he bounces off and cuts it back to where the play was not designed to go.
i expected E.J. to be elite this year but instead he just seems to be very solid. maybe he has lost some speed since his knee injury or maybe i'm just being results oriented and haven't seen him make a lot of big plays.
when are the saints gonna stop luckboxing timely interceptions and lose a game

Re: Vikings 2009 Thread Fire Chilly
The stupid blocking scheme chilly brought here has always been bad. To have a back as good as Peterson, and a QB as good as Favre, and to almost never give Peterson a decent hole to run through, defies common sense, especially when you look at the size of our linemen.
At least they seem to have figured out how to not get Favre hammered every time he passes like a couple of the early games this year.
EJ has seemed to be reading plays wrong in a few games. A couple years ago, it seemed like he was always in the right place. I think he might be trying to make too many big plays this year, and winds up taking himself out of the play in the process. Maybe the injury hasnt helped either.

Well, it's supposed to work, right? Didn't Denver zone block forever under Shanahan and the various schlub RB's they put back there had decent seasons year after year?
It just goes counter to the natural ebb and flow of football for an O line. It should be, we pass protect, OK, take your shots at us when we are backing up; we'll get you back when we run because that's when we take our shots at you. In the zone blocking world, the D Line gets their shots in like normal on passing plays but on running plays the O line just dances with them.

I dont know enough about our scheme vs Denver's under Shanahan, but there is a massive difference in effectiveness.

Re: Vikings 2009 Thread Fire Chilly
ppl are forgetting how insane good our ZBS was working ADs rookie year, he seriously had 5ft wide holes some times. As far as him getting stuffed so much, what do you expect? When teams stack the box they're gonna stuff him a lot, if he gets past the stacked box there's less defenders to make a play and he'll be more likely to break off long runs.

Re: Vikings 2009 Thread Fire Chilly
The Vikings OL personal is vastly different than Denver's under Shanahan. He definitely wasn't rocking 6-8, 350lb tackles.
In '05, for example, their line was like:
290, 285, 285, 295, 340
The Vikings this year is:
335, 315, 300, 315, 345
And I'm especially skeptical of the first and last numbers.
Like I said, the Vikings have maulers. Their line is built more like the early 90s Cowboys than Denver's.

Re: Vikings 2009 Thread Fire Chilly
Last year the Steelers won a game 11-10, the first time that final score ever occurred in NFL history. Last year the Steelers won the Super Bowl. Vikings won 38-26 Sunday. That was the first time in NFL history a game ended with that score. I'm just sayin'....

Re: Vikings 2009 Thread Fire Chilly
not surprised to hear that it was the first 11-10 game ever, coaches r such pussies about going for 2pts. They all play "keep in there as long as possible" instead of "maximize my chance at winning"

Re: Vikings 2009 Thread Fire Chilly
I knew about that 11-10 thing...but 38-26? Really? That kinda floors me that there's never been a final score of 38-26 before.

I know. I just Robison and think people were being way too hard on him. I really doubt he was explicitly coached to catch and fall on squib kicks. I'm almost sure he has never been taught/practiced how to correctly carry the football (which isn't as straight forward as it sounds). Basically, coaching fail + bad luck. Even real kick returners fumble fairly often (relatively).

I was a lineman and I learned that at the grade school level. Apparently NFL players don't get paid the big money for their brains.

I'd imagine anyone on the kick return team that is deeper than the first two lines has probably been taught how to carry the ball if it comes to them..
Plus he played a little RB in high school

Re: Vikings 2009 Thread Fire Chilly
I Robison too, but you could see that fumble coming before it happened. I noticed one of the coaches going over to yell at him after that play.
