Ken Mauer, who’s entering his 25th season as an NBA referee, says finding resolution to a confrontation before it reaches the ‘technical’ stage is paramount. “If it’s something where I can say to the player before he overreacts, ‘Talk to me, c’mon, talk to me,’ now we’re talking,” Mauer says at the NBA referees’ annual meeting in Jersey City, NJ, in mid-September. “I avoid an overreaction; therefore, it didn’t escalate.” http://www.slamonline.com/online/the.../01/good-call/

O RLY KEN!?

Something on the lighter side: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3E4TmZG-gWI Shortly after the 3:00 mark, there are some good appearances by Rambis and Laimbeer. lol

I think the league leader in 20-20s last season had 4 all year. Love has 6 already, less than halfway through the season. There have only been 16 in the NBA all year including those 6 by Love.

Is anyone else paying attention anymore?

We got a W tonight - yay!

From what I saw, Darko looked really good tonight.

Beasley out with the ankle, so Love picked up the scoring slack - 35 points on 13/18 FGs and 5/6 from 3. He "only" had 11 boards because he had to do more shooting from the outside, which took him away from the basket a lot. All star imo.

I've said before its like 5 on 4 for the other team when Flynn is out there. I'm starting to think we'd be better off playing 4 on 5 than have Flynn playing. Its so bad right now, it almost looks like he's trying to throw the game when he plays. He's almost as bad offensively now as he is defensively. The closest comparison I can think of is Troy Hudson - post injury. This guy needs to go to the D league. I think the rest of the league knows now, so its probably too late to trade him for a late 2nd round pick anymore.

did anyone hear that rumor a couple weeks ago that the wolves were going after OJ Mayo? would be pretty cool imo if that turned out.

yeah, that is a dead deal right now unfortunately. We need guard help, bad. I would love to see him playing for us, as long as we dont have to give up Beasley, Love or Darko (or Rubio's rights) to get him. Apparently that's not going to happen.

I smile a little when Darko's name is mentioned as untradable, it was a great pickup. We need guard help, but there's no reason to give up any of our core guys this year because we're not going anywhere anyway. If we could get anything for Flynn I'd take it

I agree with all that.

Flynn needs to go - the sooner the better, but like I mentioned before, I think its too late. All the other GMs in the league have to be aware of how bad he is.

I saw something funny, but sad, the other day. Apparently Kahn showed interest in Aaron Brooks. We dangled Flynn, as though that was some huge prize Houston would get (forehead slap). Of course Houston had no interest.

The picking of Flynn surpassed the Will Avery pick that McFale made. Flynn is about as useful of a player as Avery was (in other words, a complete waste), but we wasted a much more valuable draft choice on him.

I disagree.

Mayo is too small to guard big 2s and he is a 2, not a 1. He might fit with us if Rubio can guard some bigger 2s. I think Mayo's a nice piece on a good team, but Beasley's upside is contending for a scoring title and being a solid #1 scoring option on a good team. There aren't too many people in the league with Beasley's scoring talent.

Cha - is there really no hope at all for Flynn? Is it possible he's still injured in any way...I mean, from last year (I didn't watch him much) word was that he'd be at least a solid NBA player and now it sounds (and from what I've seen looks) like he has a lot of work to do to just stick in the NBA at all. We obviously don't need another Sebastian Telfair situation where the guy looked to have some sort of potential but just kinda sucks and is a borderline D-league player.

Regarding Mayo vs. Beasley, it seems Beasley has a lot more upside still at this point and the Wolves need big players, they're not trying to find a role player or to to surround anyone right now. Mayo may end up fulfilling a 3rd or 4th banana type role well but Beasley still has the potential to be a top banana or #2 banana, or a really dangerous 3rd banana, not just a good one (like Ginobli has been in San Antonio some years, and Parker I guess the other years when Ginobli was #2).

even at 6'4 i think mayo is a much more effective defensive player than beasley. he's a very good perimeter on ball defender and his defensive effort and IQ are much better than beasley's. and it's not like 6'4 is tiny for a 2. his strength and vertical are both very good which helps.

offensively i think he's more of a specialist (pure shooter who can create his own shot) than beasley , but i think he's better at his specialty than beasley is at anything. where beasley might have more value is in size, rebounding, offensive versatility etc, but the wolves already have a dominant 4 and a few solid 3s (wes johnson, webster, i think brewer should play 3 if/when he plays). they don't have anyone with great guard skills on either side of the ball and mayo would be that guy.

edit: but the biggest reason i like mayo better is that i think his intelligence and competitive drive blows beasley out of the water

willie, I doubt there's a GM in the NBA who agrees with that. And Mayo is closer to 6-2 than 6-4 from what I heard.

yugo - I had little hope for Flynn after watching him play his rookie year. Prior to that, I had high hopes before the season started, then the more I watched, the more obvious it is that he is clueless.

This year, I wanted for him to somehow improve, but he has regressed. Maybe he is still hurt a little or something, but that's not what his problem is. His problem is in his head, and I think its becoming clear that he's never going to be a good starter in the NBA. There might be hope for him to be an end of the bench guy, but I really dont think there's much upside because he is clueless.

Copied from an article at Canis:

Flynn, however, I think might be in for a lot of bench time. He and Rambis do not get along at all, and Kurt conversely is a big fan of Bassy. That leads one to believe all this is trying to showcase Flynn for a trade (if so, it's not working...) and if one can't be found by next month, Jonny's out and Sebastian is back in. That's my prediction.

I hope that prediction is right. Not that I like Telfair, but he would be a significant improvement over Flynn.

what don't you/wouldn't they agree with? certainly no one thinks that beasley is a better defensive player than mayo!?

that's wierd since he was measured at 6'4 and a quarter with shoes on at his draft combine and many sources actually list him as 6'5.

Beasley is a big man and has a lot more upside than Mayo. Good big men are more valuable than undersized 2s imo. I think Beasley has a lot of room for improvement on D, and I do think he's interested in improving and being a team player. Scoring is what comes easiest for him, and he has shown some flashes of being a very good passer too.

I dont remember details for sure, but I think what I heard was Mayo's shoes accounted for ~1.5".

Nice 3rd quarter! Only 9 TOs.

I have the football game on the TV and the basketball game on my computer. I'm trying to figure out which one sucks worse.

yeah, the Wolves game was fun to watch for a while. I didnt see the football game, but I saw the score. Go Bears imo.

The refs were pretty brutal against the Wolves again tonight. There was nothing as over the top like the 5 technicals in 10 seconds, but they let Orlando get away with pounding on us and kept calling ticky tack **** on us all night. Both Darko & Pec fouled out. Howard should have, but no.

Brewer played well tonight for the most part. He's disruptive, in a good way, sometimes, and he was definitely more good than bad tonight. He made some layups and even some jump shots too.

We missed Beasley.

Ridnour was mostly good tonight too.

Love had a pretty ordinary 11/15. They weren't letting him get too many open looks.

Darko was looking very good, holding his own vs Howard, before the foul trouble started.

Pek was very good in defending Howard.

Flynn is just awful. Have I mentioned that before? I think we've damaged his trade value beyond repair by playing him every game.

I was looking at the wolves' remaining schedule and it doesn't seem too tough. So I went and looked at SOS and so far they've had the 3rd toughest SOS. The Lakers have had the easiest, I hope they struggle.

yeah, I hate the Lakers.

re our schedule - what would be best for the team's future imo - finish with no worse than the 11th worst record in the league this season, so the Clippers get this year's #1. This draft is expected to be very weak because almost all the good underclassmen are going to stay in school because of the looming lockout. Next year's draft will be a lot better, and if we finish with a top 10 pick this year, we have to keep it and give the Clippers next year's pick.

I think we'd have to finish somewhere close to .500 for the remaining games. I dont think its very likely to happen, but its not totally impossible.

The side benefit of winning more now - it breeds confidence for the players we currently have. Tanking games and winning at a 25% clip does nothing positive to build a winning team. This is definitely not the year to tank for a better chance at a better draft pick.

whats the closest to the bottom of the league they could finish and still luckbox #11 or worse? e.g. could they finish 7th to last and still get screwed (lucky) in the lottery and get 11?

I'm pretty sure it is 8th. The lottery is only for the top 3 spots. So it is possible for 3 teams slotted below them to move in front of them and bump them to the 11th spot, there is probably a better chance you'll see 80 degrees in MN next week than that happening.

The hardest thing to take for K-Love lovers praying that their guy sneaks onto the West squad for the All-Star Game is that the young Wolves' dismal record includes a league-high five L's after leading by 15 or more.

Aldrich made a good case last night to put himself ahead of Love

Wes got a DNPCD last night. They benched the wrong former Syracuse G imo. Apparently Rambis didnt like the way Matthews went off on Wes in the previous Portland game. Wes does need a fire lit under his ass - hopefully this will help, but I doubt it.

great quote from Canis - in reference to Kahn, Rambis & Flynn:

...the GM who can’t really GM is pushing the coach who can’t really coach to play a player who can’t really play

I read something else interesting today - McFale tended to keep his thoughts to himself about the draft and trades, up until the end when Hoiberg & Coopper were given a little more authority. When the new people started having more say in the organization, things like advanced stats were thrown into the mix. They subscribed to a stats service and Cooper threw in some things he brought over from Houston.

Prior to that, McFale had been swayed by things like Foye's hot tourney play, just like Kahn got fooled by Flynn's 5 OT performance. When you pay attention to long-run stats, you dont get fooled as much by hot performances in small sample sizes.

When Kahn came aboard, he basically threw advanced stats & number crunching out the window and preached about "hard work".
