Way to ruin our matchup with you next week Michigan. YOU SUCK. Great now if Michigan comes out all fired up and manages to beat my Ducks then I will be a fan of a team who lost to a team who lost to a 1-AA team (I refuse to use the new subdivision moniker from the NCAA)

We may come out fired up, but we don't cover anybody, especially in the middle of the field. I just read a quote from the App St. QB. He said he was praying after watching the UM films from last year that UM didn't make any significant changes in the defensive philsophy. He couldn't believe how UM doesn't defend the middle of the field. Fortunately for him, Michigan does not make any adjustments.

Not likely, unless the new coach works wonders. Our defense figures to be so-so, while the offense loses Henne, Hart, Long, and very possibly Manningham. The way the schedule set up, this was supposed to be the year.

This game is without a doubt the biggest upset since Buster Douglas knocked out Mike Tyson.
I'm gonna take a crack at this. Tyson Douglas was 90.

Golden State over Dallas - no

baseball - maybe if you count Boston down 0-3. But as far as the from the start of the series (game or match) - no

Football - as a Chiefs fan I'd like to think Arizona over Denver in Denver on the last game, so we could go to the playoffs - but in the cosmic scheme of things - no

hockey - no

tennis - no

golf - by definition no

soccer - who knows, doubt it

Argentina over Team USA in basketball in 2002? (I'm sure Argentina would agree)

Chris Moneymaker (hallowed be his name) over Sammy Farha?

Eh. I'm cashed.

Cincinnati over Wisconsin circa 1998ish? They did go on to win the Rose Bowl so were actually a really good team where Michigan may turn to be out kind of meh. Line was -28 IIRC. Don't remember how good Cincinnati turned out to be.

Rulon Gardner > Alexander Karelin in the 2000 Greco-Roman wrestling gold medal match. Karelin had a 200something match winning streak and hadn't given up a point in 6 years.

Best possible things to hope for after the September 1 soul crushing defeat of epic proportions:

1. Henne starts channeling Rex Grossman, says "[censored] it I'm going deep" twenty times a game, throws 6 TDs a game against OTHER TEAMS' crappy pass defenses -- I'm looking at you, Minnesota.

1b. Shawn Crable says "[censored] it I'm blitzing on every play", winds up with 44 sacks.

2. Oregon is so overconfident after hearing about the results that they miss their bus to the airport.

3. Notre Dame is really as bad as they appeared to be against GT, they score only 3 points against Michigan's Division III quality defense (wooo just insulted Division III), Weis adds several gallons of beer to his daily intake of 20 lbs of chicken wings, literally explodes sometime late in the season.

4. Eastern Michigan tries to run the spread with undersized slow white guys and throws enough interceptions to keep the score close.

5. Ron Zook starts punting on first down, gets fired, half the Illinois roster transfers to Florida, the other half transfers to Illinois State. Roster filled with volunteers and band members, Michigan squeaks out 6-0 win.

6. Michigan State is undefeated going into November, loses at home in finest John L Smith fashion 99-98 in 12 overtimes to that team that couldn't beat a I-AA opponent.

7. Ohio State students decide to get the looting and drunken orgies underway before the first snap, resulting in live television coverage of boooobs instead of football.

Lines on these games are hard to find but I did find some. I came across -27.5 and -25.5, which for a game like this, is not actually that large. To put it in perspective, USC was favored by about 49 today, while OU and PSU were favored by about 40.

So for a I-AA team going on the road to face the #5 team in the country...yeah, not that large of a line. App State is pretty good.
In that case, this is in no way the biggest upset ever.

Only if Lloyd Carr is finally sent packing. Excerpt from an article...

Appalachian State's win does seem to pass the one second-tier programs used to regard as their crowning achievement -- The Citadel's season-opening win in 1992 over Arkansas that led to the firing of Razorbacks coach Jack Crowe following the game.

Michigan coach Lloyd Carr will not get fired after this upset, but he might've wished he retired after last season when the Wolverines won 11 games and played in the Rose Bowl. Michigan has now lost three in a row over two seasons.

Carr will likely second-guess a lot from the game, and the practices that led to it, and might regret going for 2-point conversions twice in the final 15-plus minutes.

After Appalachian State went ahead 31-20, Hart scored with 24 seconds left in the third quarter and the 2-point conversion failed as Carr tried to pull within a field goal. Following Hart's late TD that put Michigan ahead by one, Carr couldn't justify kicking the extra point and backup running back Brandon Minor stumbled to the turf.

Carr didn't regret going for it both times, but did lament the many mistakes, penalties and missed opportunities after opening his news conference by giving Appalachian State credit.

"We were not a well-prepared football team," Carr said. "That is my job, and I take full responsibility."

RESIGNATION PLEASE!

Well lucky for you guys our QB is as inconsistent as there has ever been. We have tremendous talent at WR but no one to get them the ball. Luckily he is real fast and can run which helps (only a little) to make up for his inconsistent passing. Look for a HEAVY dose of the running game.

Alright, all the very, very, very much-deserved crap we're taking aside, here are my thoughts for the rest of the season:

1. Everybody knows Michigan is not nearly as bad as they showed yesterday and the the vast majority of the time they would win. That said, I felt like I got shot yesterday. Just a horrible, horrible performance by everyone except Mike Hart. If he doesn't go down, we win. His 54-yard run was sick. If he gets injured, our season is done and I'm going to tighten the noose that has been around my neck since about 2 pm yesterday.

2. Holy God our defense needs some serious help. There's really nothing else to say; if they don't pick it up massively every single game will be a shootout.

3. Once Henne plays even averagely, the offense will be OK. If we don't see heavy, heavy doses of Manningham these next few games I'm going to firebomb the football offices in Ann Arbor. All this is moot if Hart goes down.

4. Here is where we stand on all of our preseason goals:

-Undefeated: Uh, nope.
-National Title: Only if Michigan somehow destroys everyone in sight by 50 and any other team with any kind of claim whatsoever to a BCS bowl loses like 3 games. Appy State blitzing the Montana School for Blind Women and all the other teams they play by 2309834 each game would kind of help maybe a little bit too but probably not.
- Big 10 Title: Still very, very possible. I know people are going to say (right, as of now) that Michigan blows, not a top 25 team, etc., etc. but seriously, once the hysteria dies down and we get a look at this team again, we'll see. Yeah, anyone realistically has a shot after yesterday, but I don't think anyone is seriously ready to chalk up Michigan as an auto-win or anything. We'll see.
-Beat Rivals/Anyone of Note/Anyone: If we don't wipe the floor with Notre Dame I'd be disappointed. Beating Wiscy or OSU would just be gravy, but there's a lot of time between then and now and this team could vary radically.

5. Enjoy your last season Lloyd. You probably weren't going to come back anyway of your own accord, but there just is no way you can come back now even if you wanted to. It's sad that people have short memories and will remember this more than the various titles you won, but your coaching decisions/preparation no doubt played a large role yesterday. It's too bad our team had to be the wake up call for every major program in the nation to not be arrogant and take teams lightly.

6. Please, please, please open the playbook and fire away DeBord. No conservative offense BS is going to cut it anymore. The only way Michigan can get any respect back is to start crushing teams.

7. Is this how the USSR felt after Lake Placid?

Flame away. I think this program will see better days real, real soon. If not, I'll still be here.

edit: Just to clarify, I by no means think the Big 10 title is probable. Just possible. I'm trying to have some hope for something this year.
