What? AFAIK this isn't true at all.

It isn't, I mean you are entitled to your area and space, so if you are running in a line and the receiver cuts across you or into you, you did nothing wrong

Alright, I guess the wording made it wrong, techincally. I understood what ship was saying, and I assumed Semtex did too, and that's why I found it odd.

Apologies Sem, don't take it personal

Actually it is very much true, outside of incidental contact (tangling of the legs, and other SLIGHT contact while making a play for the ball) you can not put a hand on the receiver without it being illegal contact or if the ball is being thrown his way, PI.

Not entirely true anymore.

First, there is massive difference between not being able to touch someone and not being able to put a hand on them. Second , I'm still pretty sure you are 100% wrong. AFAIK you are allowed to incidentally place your hands on a receiver or place your hands in a fashion that doesn't restrict their ability to catch the ball, without it being PI.

You are correct, it would be illegal contact. That is a 5 yard penalty and an automatic first down.

So, for the play in question, when Sanchez bombed it deep on FIRST DOWN, a ruling of illegal contact would have had a completely inconsequential effect on the outcome of the game. Not at all like what actually ended up happening

Illegal contact wasn't a possibility, because it can only happen before the ball is thrown. Anything after the ball is in the air is PI. However, here are the list of things that do NOT constitute PI from the NFL rulebook.

Quote:
Actions that do not constitute pass interference include but are not limited to:

(a) Incidental contact by a defender’s hands, arms, or body when both players are competing for the ball, or neither player is looking for the ball. If there is any question whether contact is incidental, the ruling shall be no interference.

(b) Inadvertent tangling of feet when both players are playing the ball or neither player is playing the ball.

(c) Contact that would normally be considered pass interference, but the pass is clearly uncatchable by the involved players.

(d) Laying a hand on a receiver that does not restrict the receiver in an attempt to make a play on the ball.

(e) Contact by a defender who has gained position on a receiver in an attempt to catch the ball.

If there is any question whether contact is incidental, the ruling shall be no interference.

imo this should have been a no call, but I'm obviously biased.

by that argument PI occurs on 95% of all pass plays. That rule about not interfering with the ability to make the catch shows that technically it is not while still being an atrocious call

Exactly. "By the letter of the law" it wasn't PI at all.

Urrh I might be with Chief here. As sorry as our secondary has been Brees is going to positively flay us. But they aren't amazing against the run so maybe it plays out like Indy with the wildcat giving us a huge TOP edge and hence a close game.

our secondary has been brutal this year, but it isn't as though there isn't hope.
Both of our safeties are good players and not old. Sean Smith and Vontae Davis are rookies, but look very good for 1st year corners and have a lot of potential. Will Allen has been a playmaker last 2 years for Miami and has been very bad this year, but its not as though he got really old all of a sudden, he still has potential to be good.
In my opinion we need a more consistent pass rush, perhaps putting Taylor and Porter on the same side to rush the QB and Wake on the other side with Merling up the middle on 3rd and longs.
Our LBs aren't good in coverage and Nathan Jones our dime back is really bad too. Did Jason Allen get cut?

I thought I saw a couple plays in the Jets game where taylor and porter were on the same side. I agree that Porter is not getting anything done. There were some highlights on nfl.com of the jets game and porter was getting blocked by a solo tight end. He needs to be cut.
I don't think the secondary is that bad, I think they just can't get any pass rush. Qbs shouldn't have time to wait for their wrs to run 40 yards down the field before he throws the ball. The coverage is tight, but the receivers are just making huge plays against them.

imo we control the clock for 40 minutes and win a squeaker by having the ball last. This is definitely going to be another shoot out though. Look for lots of points.
