i'm not sure I even understand why we're in such a hurry to trade Soriano. Our team is so left handed now plus jackson and rizzo are left handed. The money is a sunk cost, so unless we're finding someone who's really going to eat '13 and '14 or a big, big part of it, what exactly are we going to gain on the field by getting rid of him?

He finally got some real coaching on playing the OF and the results are pretty good.

he's barely above replacement levels at a position where you desperately need run production and he's getting 18 million a year. i wouldn't say the cubs are in a hurry to dump him this year, but he's not exactly part of the long term winning plan.

you can argue they wouldn't put anything better on the field right now, but dude please don't compliment his defense.

3rd best UZR among MLB LFs. I don't see how anyone could have a problem with his defense this year.

i don't have a problem with it this year. but that doesn't make him a good defender. he's just running good.

anyway, it doesn't matter one bit how he fields. they're not winning anything this year. it's lipstick on a pig.

you should review his historical UZR. He had problems catching the ball and had problems with the well and the vines. He's dealt with all three.

yes, he was dropping balls (usually line drives) b/c he had bad technique. now with some good OF coaching from Dave McKay, he hasn't dropped a ball all season. He covers enough ground, he throws adequately, and now he isn't dropping the ball. He's made several web gem type plays in 2.5 months. He has well above average fielding metrics. And he's doing it on a bum knee. He's been a good fielder this year and it's really not even close.

what am i wrong about? that's he's not a good defender? he's not. he's definitively average. and he's performed well below the 13.2 in the last 3 complete seasons.

that's not even my point tho. let's try it this way. raise your hand if you think soriano's defense is ever going to contribute to a world series.

i never disagreed with this, i just said it doesn't make him a good defender. sabermatricians think fielding stats are terrible with a small sample size. they want 3 full years on numbers like uzr/150.

no but his lack of performance at a run producing position would. which is why this is a non-issue. soriano will never contribute to a world series. i hope i'm wrong about that b/c it means the cubs would be winning by 2014, cuz there's no way in hell he's with the cubs after that season (if he's still around at all.)

he's an average defender (lifetime) who's running good (this year.) is that hard to understand or something? those two things don't conflict.

it's possible for an average defender to play good defense for a stretch.
