I think Masterson just killed Ryan Freel.

its also the fact that he's a massive pussy who find every excuse to sit out of a game. Blister on his pinkie? Sitting out. Toenail cut too short? Sitting out. He doesn't appear to have any heart.

FYP

making character judgements out of ignorance (and I'm not just talking about getting his injuries wrong) is bad habit to have

He's also, in some sense, a real victim of how good his swing looks, how "effortless" his swing/fielding looks, and his patience at the plate.

He runs and fields very well, but he never looks like he's running especially hard, even though he (ldo clearly) is. And he gets really good jumps on the ball in the OF, so he's not usually diving around (ala Trot Nixon) in an effort to compensate for bad jumps. Red Sox fans got used to seeing Nixon (who consistently got bad jumps and was really slow) dive around. And Nixon had haaaaaaaaaahhhht, so of course not diving around due to Drew's superior reading ability when the ball comes off the bat and better athleticism creates a perception that he doesn't have haaaahhht, like Nixon. If he did, he'd be diving around. In other words, Drew's a vastly superior RF than Nixon, but Nixon did things in a way that "looked" better to a lot of fans.

And his swing has a nice rhythm and looks "effortless" too. And when he makes contact, the ball usually goes pretty far. I bet he has a pretty high swing/total base ratio (not sure where this stat is tracked, if it is). But he just doesn't swing much, because again, he's got excellent pitch selection. The problem is superficial -- he's so patient that he doesn't swing at much, and we all "learned" in Little League that you swing the bat with two strikes at anything close, blah blah meow chow. But Drew doesn't, he takes a lot of called 3rd strikes, so it creates the perception that he's "lazy" and "doesn't care" because he doesn't flail around swinging at bad pitches.

So Drew is a great contributor, but the aesthetics make it look like he could be doing so much more. And his perception as a guy who doesn't give a **** is reinforced by the fact that he's so patient and takes a lot of pitches, it makes him look like a guy that's too lazy to get the bat off of his shoulders.

Essentially he's the victim of people's bad perceptions about the way baseball is supposed to be played and what kind of things truly lead to wins. Drew does a lot of the latter in a style that makes it look like he's breaking a bunch of fundamental axioms about baseball which aren't valid.

i'm pretty sure it's cause he kind of sucked in the first year of his contract. by next year when he had an awesome season, it was too late. a bunch of sox fans already hated him.

they came in prepared to hate him, too, though, just do to his contract and the reputation he already had with fans in LA. As opposed to someone like Ellsbury, who came up in the system and had an absurd, unsustainable start, and now can't do any wrong even though he's pretty awful at the plate.

yeah, i'm sure that didn't help either. but if he had his 2008 season in 2007, i think a lot more sox fans would like him.

awful is a little harsh. ellsbury would be awful at the plate if he were a 29 year old corner of.

i dont think so. fans dont even acknowledge he was good last year (mostly driven by WEEI radio in boston). if you were to take a poll on boston.com asking who contributed more, ellsbury or drew last year, i bet ellsbury would win 60/40. it's unbelievable.

well yeah, but they already hated him.

also ellsbury was surprisingly close to drew last season. couldn't blame the fans in your hypothetical scenario too much.

i guess my point is he never got a chance. even in '07 he started off very hot, but was still called "nancy drew" etc etc. i think it had something to do with boras and the red sox negotiations with him (daisuke and varitek were big stories in the same offseason), but there comes a point where you need to acknowledge that he's one of the better rf'ers in the AL and realize he doesnt hurt the team.

Is their any other nationally known state holiday, besides Patriots Day?

I've lived in Mississippi for nine years now, and if this state has any holidays, I haven't heard about them yet.

Before that, I was in Nevada for seven years. They had Nevada Day (commemorating the day the state entered the union), but I only found about it because I was broke, and the bank was closed.

last year the stat people bashed mastersin and praised bucholtz so much , I don't know the stat they used but I commented how I liked masterson better than clay last year when clay took his spot in the rotation

If so, it's probably because of his relatively high HR and BB rates from last year. If Masterson can get those down closer to his minor league numbers, he'll be solid.

Gotta love the way the Sox are swinging the bats right now. Although, I'm sure ytf is bumming he hasn't been able to rip on Papi in several days.

Always nice to go from 2-6 to 9-6. Nothing like a little Baltimore IMO.

Reminding me of 2007 actually. The offense struggled in the beginning of the year. Then they played Seattle and lit up Jeff Weaver. I remember wondering if Weaver was the baseball version of a slumpbuster (like doing a fat chick), and they went on a tear. Maybe Baltimore is this year's slumpbuster.
