Dimitroff not out of the woods yet: http://www.thefalcoholic.com/2015/1/...fired-with-new

We don't want McDaniels right? But hell who do we want...

Yeah I don't want McDaniels, for several reasons

1) We need a defensive coach
2) His coordinating success could be attributed to Brady and Belichick, not his system
3) His biggest most notable player acquisition was drafting Tim Tebow

He has obvious familiarity with Dimitroff AND Pioli, so I guess we'll see.

I haven't made up my mind whether I want to keep or get rid of Dimitroff. From another falcoholic article:

Quote:
"We think we have some good football players on this team. We also know that I have made mistakes, and I know that I am going to be scrutinized for it. I know that I have over the last months looked at every different aspect of our football operations as far as what needs to be adjusted as far as myself and my approach to things as well. I am responsible as much as Smitty is for this organization and the success of this organization and the downfall of this organization."

That's everything that I could possibly ask for from him at this point. I was very happy to hear this.
But the real clincher is this:

Quote:
Along those lines, it was strange to learn that Dimitroff had wanted to do more to improve our pass rush while our coaching staff wanted pretty much the defense that they got for this season.

We had heard from day one that Smitty and Dimitroff had a common vision for the roster, that they worked together hand in hand to identify the specific needs and player profiles desired to fill those needs, and that they met daily to discuss personnel. So it was an eyebrow-raiser to hear that they weren't on the same page and that the disconnect had been that big. When we first started hearing how Bobby Petrino wasn't always on the same page with our front office, it really wasn't a surprise. But hearing confirmation that our current regime wasn't entirely in sync - that's big news.
The article is implying that the plan to have "fat guys clog up the line to let our super awesome young LB's rush free" was Smith's plan, and Dimitroff may have wanted to bring in new personnel. When it all went to tears, Dimitroff later had the maturity not to blame The Process, or lack thereof, on Smith.

If all that's true, and if Dimitroff is a smart guy who can learn from his mistakes, then I'm willing to continue to trust his player evaluations and draft choices.

We're apparently leaning McDaniels lol

what if Art Blank threw like $10m a year at Urban Meyer? Not saying for football purposes. but we have a lot of PSLs to sell

As has long been expected, we hired Dan Quinn.

When I first knew we were looking for a coach, I thought Rex Ryan would be a good hire, man knows defense, right?

Then after he signed with Buffalo, I read a story that he got his tattoo of his wife in a Sanchez jersey touched up to be a Bills jersey, and thought maybe we dodged a bullet there.

I was surprised the Jets got a coach first... I would have thought we'd be a far more desirable coaching destination since we're set at QB.

Now I'm thinking maybe we got the right guy all along. He's said all the right things.

And I'm thinking the Shanahan hire for OC might be a really good thing. At first I thought that he might be bad because the Shanahan name isn't exactly great for coaching, but then I thought about how this team values legacies. Jake Matthews, Desmond Trufant, Kyle Shanahan... they've been around football their whole lives.

And it looks like the Browns are really sad to see him go. He did a lot with smoke and mirrors in Cleveland, he's gotta be doing handsprings to work with our offense.

I can't wait for draft season so I can talk myself into approximately 58,934 DE's for our first pick at 8!

Who cares about OC, imo. We could put a 2p2 coalition together and have a top-10 offense with the talent that is there.

All about defense, imo, and getting new guys in particular. Both through the draft and free agency.

Speaking of legacies,

we just hired Steve Scarnecchia to be "assistant head coach."

He's the son of Dante Scarnecchia, the legendary long-time Patriots O-line coach who most people haven't heard of. Dante retired a couple years ago, but people have compared him and O-lines to Lebeau and defenses.

But all the press releases are talking about is that, in the middle of Falcons Noisegate, he was the video director of the Spygate Pats from 01-04 and was fined for recording an opposing team's walkthrough in 07.

Ok, let's talk about the defense.

As it stands now, Trufant seems to be the only no-doubt keeper. I feel Alford has lower upside but can be a serviceable #2 NFL corner.

Worrilow is a hustle, try-hard kind of guy... I'd say he's a good tackler but my opinion of our team tackling from our 2014 tape is not good. I wonder if I'm overrating him because of sortbytackles. He's definitely a liability in coverage.

The person I've flip-flopped the most on is Kroy Biermann. He's shown flashes in pass rush, though they've been few and far between lately, and I'd say he's below average at tackling, and again, if he's trying to cover, we have a problem. I don't think he has the upside to ever be more than what he is, so if we move on from him I wouldn't be too upset.

The front office seems to want to give Weatherspoon a prove-it deal, I think I'd be okay with that. He's gotta stay on the field, obviously.

We gave Willy Mo big-time money a couple years ago, and we certainly have a leadership void on defense that he should fill.

I'm cautiously optimistic that between Kemal Ishmael or Dezmen Southward, one of those two could be the long-term answer at FS... leaning Kemal at the moment.

I think it's too early to cut bait on Hageman, but I will say I wasn't encouraged by his attitude on Hard Knocks, or that instagram "can you find weed for my friend?" snafu.

I think it's too early to tell on Goodman, Maponga, and Shembo, but they haven't shown much, and I always overrate players I watch every week, so maybe we should move on from them.

I'm completely fine with moving on from Bartu and Umenyiora.

Babineaux, Peters, and Soliai are all gonna be a year older, and they just signed deals last year. Don't really know what you do here. I do like Babineaux more than his tape would seem to warrant.

No matter what, this defense won't be a 1-year fix, that much we can be sure of.

PW should our best special teamer, not our leading tackler.

Still think Hageman has a shot. Other linemen: meh. All on the chopping block.

Save us, Tru.

Gotta say, I like all of the cuts so far. They make sense and suggest that Quinn really does have a clear vision for the team. I'm hoping (as always) that this change is as good as it looks like it will be. Let Osi, Biermann and Babineaux walk and hit the FA hard with pass rushers. If they do that I could actually envision a scenario where they pick up Amari Cooper in the draft. That, or trade down. So far it honestly looks like addition by subtraction, which is something I wish MS had done more often. Loyalty is a great thing, for sure, but business is business.

I'm fine with cutting Massaquoi, sentimentally I liked Harry Douglas, but I understand moving on from a 31 year old WR.

I hope we don't regret cutting Blalock, but I think it saved something like 4M. Guess that's a high number for an averageish guard.

Do we think signing Greg Hardy to big money (if he becomes available) would be a good idea?

If he came from the Saints, then perhaps, but I don't think the added benefit of him being from the Panthers is that much of a boon. He also has major character concerns and I don't think he is good enough to justify all of that collectively. I would much rather see Pioli work his magic and try to break the bank on Houston.
