5.8 Jon Lester

I usually try to avoid participating in pitching runs but I want a reliable ace and Lester is the only one left I'm completely comfortable with.

OF Bryce Harper
SS Carlos Correa
OF JD Martinez
1B/OF Ian Desmond
SP Jon Lester

5.9 Jose Abreu

1B is weak, and while power is plentiful, with Abreu I get a guy who can hit 30 HR while helping my average. Bonus if he gets traded to team that doesn't suck.

SRM commented on the 1b drop off after Myers. I don't think it starts until Aubrey leaves the board.

Agree the drop off is after Abreu and Myers.

Abreu at 5.9 is great value imo.

5.10 Justin Upton OF

I really like Upton going into this year. His average is my only concern, but 260ish should be in range. I project him to have a 28/85/75/10 line by season's end with the normal Upton variance along the way.

3b- Donaldson
SS- Bogaerts

I'm taking

Aroldis Chapman
Kenley Jansen

When I didn't take a SP at the 3/4 turn I knew the top tier would be gone. I've got a fair amount of speed and AVG potential already so I can focus later in the draft on the two areas where I think there is depth: mid tier SP and power.

I've bagged 60-80 excess strikeouts over the average teams two closers. Also under rated with the elite guys is the ratio influence. If you assume 1200 IP for your staff at 3.50 ERA and assume these two guys give you 120 IP at 2.00, you'd need 400 innings of 2.95 ERA to have the same impact. That's tough to find even at this stage of the draft

I've been thinking about the hitters and then grab two closers strategy for a while. Basically it sets up where you load up on offense grab two top closers (Chapman/Jansen in this case) then target some 4/5 starters/streaming pitchers on teams with high overs that could put up 10-12 wins. Then continue to keep ratios in check by adding a few highly skilled middle relievers who can keep the ratios at bay.

I've never seen it play out over a season in Roto though, I would assume it would be hard to stay in the middle of the pack of wins and Ks. Obviously, this would work much better in a head to head league.

I think it can work. It'd be interesting to compare ratio and strikeout totals per Steamer or whatever at the end for this team to some others.

Plus it looks like just 12-13 SP have been taken. Let's assume ~20 when I draft again. Nothing to stop from jumping into the SP 2/3 tier if I like someone. Plus as of right now there are really what, 20-22 real viable closers you'd feel good about drafting?

Think this strategy depends on your league. In a Yahoo league with 1250 IP max, it could be really effective...the more innings, the less appealing.

Full disclosure I have very little idea how Yahoo settings work (can't play YPL in FL due to stupid Yahoo) so this did not occur to me when I drafted. But agree 100% with what you are saying.

6.3 Stephen Strasburg SP

Interestingly Strasburg is the pitcher I have the fewest questions about among the 4-5 at the top of my board. 150-160 innings with a 10+k/9 and a sub-3.50 era is a pretty good start, especially with the depth in the middle rounds.

6.5 Jean Segura

While I don't necessarily believe he is the .319 20/33 guy he was last year, his 2016 home/road splits give me optimism that he was more than just a product of the high altitude in Arizona

Home - .325 12hr 12sb
Road - .312 8hr 21 sb

The .353 babip is unsustainable. However he reworked his swing last year and it resulted in the highest line drive, fly ball and hard hit % of his career. I am optimistic he could get ~15 HR and score a ton of runs with Cano/Cruz/Seager hitting behind him.

Team so far:
Bryce Harper OF
Carlos Correa SS
JD Martinez OF
Ian Desmond 1B/OF
Jon Lester SP
Jean Segura 2B/SS

6.6 Zach Britton

While the oblique is a mild concern I really think it was early enough that he will be fine by opening day. And we know that Showalter won't give him too much work.

Was hoping Abreu, Segura or Cueto was going to fall to me. Not so lucky.
