Not sure if this is standard or not in leagues, but the middle of the draft turned into a complete **** show for some of these guys. They were so busted for money that they stopped bidding. It's basically the reason I have $7 left over. I got Tyrod for $2 because two guys were out of cash like half way through the draft and were waiting for only the $1 players. After the guys who would go in I'd say the top 4 rounds in a snake draft, there was very little action in terms of bidding wars.
Sometimes those kind of runs happen, and its usually with the best players. But if you notice that ALL the top players are flying off the board, and all are being overbid on, like you said, then try and get in there and a get a fair-priced player or 2, even it ifs high (but not over-priced). Usually, this means you'll miss the top 10 type guys, as those are the ones that get overbid.
Then you can grab all the other mid-range guys for really low prices since everyone has overbid already, and max out your team.

And thats the best advice for auctions.
I always make a list of players I'm targeting heavily. But that list comes from a much larger list of players I'm willing to draft. If a player from the former list gets out of hand in the bidding, I let it go.
There are many points in the draft when players will go for a bit lower than they should, and you can buy. All the extra money saved can go for when other players you want, or even if you want the elite talent, and you have the extra bucks to overbid.
There are also about 3-4 times during a draft, when a player will go for alot less than he should - like $5 or $10 savings on a $20-$25+ player. Sometimes a player will not get bid up, and you have to be ready to be there to get him, even if you didn't initially target him. This could be for many reasons - people already spent, are waiting to spend on someone else, are not overly excited about this player, etc. People just check out on that player and stop bidding, and all of a sudden, a great buy is there that shouldn't be.
Those are the players that can make an auction.
