Having no (or minimal) cold calling range from the small blind as a basic strategy is all the rage, especially against late position opens.

.. of course theoretical reasons can be given.

Thoughts on having a cold calling range in practice?

It's been all the rage for years. Playing tough players OOP when they perceive your range as weak is no fun, and you're susceptible to being squeezed pre.

Against bad players there are tons of hands that are worth calls but can't be turned into bluffs so not having a cold call range is complete nonsense. It's also not just the original raiser that needs to considered but also the player in the bb. If he's tough, you want to try and isolate the raiser to avoid that player. If he's a fish you want to just call to entice him in.

I have this loose theory that some hands that are solid 3 bets preflop at shorter stack sizes in the small blind should become calls as stacks get deeper. This is because of the threat of losing a lot of big blinds on one hand.

I think the most obvious of these hands are the middle pocket pairs. At short stack depths, these hands are easy shoves. At medium stack depths, I still like 3 betting these hands. At deeper stack depths, I'll call these hands in order to avoid a preflop raising war.

The idea is not limited to the medium pocket pairs however. I also think that some hands that are folds at shorter stack depths should be calls at and above certain stack depths. For example, I never call with 98s in the small blind 100 big blinds deep, but if the stacks are 200 big blinds deep then I think 98s is a clear call.

Also, this:

Calling is sometimes is fine, but your calling range should be narrow and depends on a lot of things.

There are few things that are "never do this"

I like calling here when there is an early raise and several others are already limping.

Disguises your hand and allows you to play suited connectors and middle pocket pair without much effort. When you flop the set the check is expected anyway and then you can smooth call and get as much value as possible when opponent inevitably bets their top pair.
