As someone who's played winning high stakes MTTs online and HS cash live, with specialization in deep stack games, and been strong in both theory as well as live game experience, I would offer one piece of advice when starting out.

Learn how each fundamental aspect of the game impacts every other fundamental aspect before doing anything else. I included some areas to focus on with some examples that only touch on the subject for each.

1) How starting hand strength changes with relation to the number of players, the stacks in play, playing styles, and position.
Example: As stacks get deeper, the value of AA goes down while the value of SCs go up.

2) How std open sizing should be a function of the stacks in play putting pressure for bet sizing to go up but wider ranges will put pressure on bet sizing going down.
Example: This relationship can best be seen in tournaments as stacks get shorter so do the bet sizes. As stacks get higher for DS play at 200+ BBs, the opposite is true but with diminishing effect, as the odds of coolers needed for those stacks to be effective go down. At the same time, wider hand ranges will put pressure on reducing bet sizing.

3) How range selection changes with style, stacks, number of players, pos.
Example: As stacks get deeper, turn/river streets become more primary as a concern vs pre-flop/flop since those streets will no longer have as much FE and your mistakes will be much larger on later streets. Turn/River boards with four/five cards will have many more combinations involved and a range that's wider can both better represent and defend those boards.

Therefore all styles ranges should increase to different degrees, to better handle these new types of confrontations. As more of the premium suited connector hands become valuable only having 4 combos each, they are more rare than PPs, they should not be wasted for balancing a pre-flop raising game that's much less effective anyway.

Another words you need to balance your street to street action along with your various value bets to bluffs action on particular streets.

4) How the three basic styles will become stronger or weaker as each of these conditions change.
Example: LAG on the bubble with a deep stack, TAG in cash games when short stacked.

5) How the styles interplay, i.e. TAG<LAG<SB<TAG, so the importance of learning all three styles and adapting/balancing styles become important. Also conditions where advantages start to fail and how to adapt each style for the layout of the game in general.

Once you have a strong understanding these fundamental relationships, more advanced topics will seem like common sense and learning new formats of the game far more intuitive.

6) Don't chase GTO, it's a snipe hunt.

7) How ICM can actually flip-flop some of these aspects.
Example: Big stacks can have FE advantage over short stacks in tournaments while the opposite can be true in cash games.

8) How live reads including not only tells, or logical reads, but even deductive reads that can be made outside of the action will give you more information to base your decisions. This aspect is difficult to learn outside of just a ton of experience but you still need to be aware of them when playing.

Imho it would be better if someone created a survey that could be used to create many groups that focus on different topics (cash vs tourney, stakes, theoretical vs applied, poker variant, etc.) could be used to create multiple study groups and laser focus the content for those groups.

The next step would probably be something similar to an agreed upon syllabus from each group so that the group is focused and prepared for each meeting (to avoid wasting time).

Groups could add to or even rotate syllabi then if the groups wanted to learn something else.

Hello, I am trying to recruit serious grinders and poker enthusiasts for a Poker Theory group on Skype.

I don't have millions of lifetime earnings, but I am a pretty consistent winner at mistakes. I want to elevate my game with others to the next level.

I am hoping we can all discuss advanced books, tools(Flopzilla, CREV, HUDs,ICM, PokerStove) and anything else relating to the math and theory of the game.
