Maths in poker.

Hi all......

Forgive me if it's gonna be too long,but I thought ,I have to make myself very clear.First,I wasn't sure if this was the right forum.I was considering the beginners ,but since I don't consider myself as one I thought that one was right.
I've been playing poker for two years now.Mostly I play tournaments,I like the idea of winning big from small "investments",haha.....My biggest achievement so far was winning a tournament on pokerstars $33 buy-in with 1072 players,so I guess I must be doing something right,
Little bit about my skills:
I think I can read players pretty well;
I'm quite agressive,maybe sometimes too agressive;
3-bet,4-bet,5-bet pre-flop not bad,I guess...;
Not afraid of making hero calls (actually I might be making too many);
Not afraid of making bluffs on all streets(again maybe too many sometimes);
Having said that I make some pretty big folds as well...

Now to my main concern:MATHS......
I understand that Barry Greenstein once said "maths is for idiots" or "maths is not important",but I still think it is very helpfull......
I always strugle with chosing the amount I have to bet...
Whether it's pre-flop,c-bet,v-bet,probe bet,bluff,check-raise or how to make money out of holding nuts,etc.....
I know,we have to consider different situations,positions,opponents,etc,and there is no general rule and no simple answer to that question,but I was wondering if there are any books,authors or articles which could help me.
I know I will sound like a fish(probably I am),but for example ,I'm still not sure betting what percentage of my stack makes me pot-commited and things like that.I know some of you will say,how did this guy managed to win anything,but I did and to be honest deep inside I feel like maths is the only thing which stops from playing in bigger tournaments,like "sunday million"or simmilar....

I'm really sorry for my long speech,but I thought,I had to make myself clear...Also I would like to thank in advance for any suggestions or advices you could share wih me.

P.S.Obviously,as you can see english is not my native language ,so apologies for any mistakes,

Hi, if you haven't read them, Super System 1 & 2 are pretty much the essential, bare-minimum reading for NLHE players. I haven't read Harrington on Hold 'em but hear that is great for tournament strategy. You could defo do a lot worse than check them out.
As for maths, you're right that it depends on the situation. You need to be able to work out your outs and pot odds (again, the bare minimum) in your head. There are many online articles on this and it just takes a bit of practice.
Avoid getting pot commited by being the player doing the betting in a hand, taking the initiative as calling off because 'I'm committed' is a bad excuse.
C-betting these days is pretty much 2/3 pot standard, but many players mix it up as that's mind-numbingly predictable.
Don't feel in a rush to play big tournaments. Most of us never do! Play at a level you're comfortable with, stay on these forums and you'll improve. It's a fact

I'm new on the forum too, just my two cents, congrats on that big score on stars

Re: Maths in poker.

Thx for replying......

I've got Harringtons first and third part.Third one is all more usefull when it comes to maths,I think. You mentioned Super System .I'll will defo look for it.I think I heard about it.Sklansky if I'm correct.I'll check anyway.
I'm not really rushing to play big tournaments,I'm very competitive person and I guess the best way to check if you're any good is to play against the best,if that makes sense.I mean ,don't get me wrong,I know I will never be Negranu, I've got a good job,no plans to quit or anything silly like that and luckilly I'm in the position,that I can afford to spend $215 every sunday.....When I do that,though,I want to be sure I'm not going to be eaten by all those sharks there or at least I will put up a fight,
That is why I need to improve in maths deparment.......

Thanks again and I good luck in your games !!!!

Re: Maths in poker.

Just to clarify the Barry Greenstein quote was, "Math is idiotic.", and he said it to win a 'prop bet' to generate donations far a charity... Taking the statement as 'hold 'em fact' would be a mistake, because there's definitely math involved in the game.
