That's not exactly accurate... If the larger BI -$1 is > the lower max BI you actually lose more value per hand by playing the lower BI.

Example:
If you play a $10 max BI game and lose $1 you still get more value for your plays by having $9 in the game than you would by playing a $5 max BI game longer to win more of the higher BI, given the effective stack size of the other players in the $10 max BI game is over $5, of course.
