Handrankings and how they are calculated Handrankings and how they are calculated

I have been studying shortstack play 3handed in a bubble situation 6max with Holdem Resources Calculator.

Lets take this as an example:

Blinds 10/50/100

Stacks [before posting Ante + Blinds]

BU 1000
SB 500
BB 1000

BU folds
SB call shove 66,6%
HMRes defines it 22+ Qx+ J2s+ J6o+ T3s+ T7o+ 95s+ 97o+ 84s+ 87o 74s+ 76o 64s+ 53s+ 43s

taken a 66,6% open range in equilab vs 1 player you get 22+, A2s+, K2s+, Q2s+, J2s+, T2s+, 94s+, 84s+, 74s+, 64s+, 53s+, A2o+, K2o+, Q4o+, J6o+, T6o+, 96o+, 86o+, 76o

i looked through every Handranking that Equilab offers and nothing matched the Handranking of HoldemResources Calculator.

Can someone explain where this difference comes from? And what ranking this program uses?

I always thought that GTO play is calculated by simulating a sh*t ton of hands and comparing the outcome. So how is there such a difference and how is it really calculated?

Thanks for any answers

There are some minor differences in how solvers work under the hood, especially if the simulate instead of enumerate all flops. The simulation could potentially alter results.

You also have to know whether they are calculating ICM or chip equity as that will change your answers slightly.

Equilab and Pokerstove based their rankings on how much equity each hand has against (I think) three random hands. In what's more likely to be a heads up pot, the strength of various holdings is quite different.

e.g. If you have 22 multiway in a fixed limit game, it's rarely going to win at showdown multiway unless it makes a set, because it's pretty likely that one of the players will at least make a pair. If you jam 22 BvB, you're often flipping when you get called and could win unimproved.

The 66% range you quoted in the OP would be the top 66% of hands (by EV) in that specific situation. PokerStove or Equilab use handrankings that are defined in some generic way, not specific to the spot you mentioned.

That also explains why some solver are so incredibly fast while others take some time

Thanks everyone

In a more philosophical sense than a technical sense, I think that the hands on the margins are the least profitable hands, naturally. This leads me to think that it doesn't really matter if you play a slightly tight range or a slightly loose range. As long as you understand where the margin is, the hands you either add or subtract from your range will hardly make a difference in your winrate from each position individually and altogether. In other words, if Joey plays 70% and Jimmy plays 60%, is either really gaining anything vs the other?
