Forget GTO, ranges, balanced plays, etc... Forget GTO, ranges, balanced plays, etc...

Hi,

Let's imagine we stop thinking about our range in postflop spots, and we only make our decision based on the most +EV action given our holecards.

What would be wrong with that?

>> I guess it would be pretty easy to read and so very exploitable, but I am not sure.

Could such a basic style beat nowadays mid-stakes online games?

>> I suppose it could work vs very fishy field, but would not work vs observant players, but I am not sure.

What do you think about this?

The problem is that the ev of individual hand combinations is affected by the rest of our range and the opponent's range. Contrast these two situations for example:

I raise 3x utg 6 max with KK, only the big blind calls and we go heads up to the flop.

459r

----

I raise 3x on the button with KK, only the big blind calls and we go heads up to the flop.

459r

Now, will the ev of betting $X with KK be the same in both situations?

Nope.

Also to forget ranges and just play what you think your EV is versus flop texture requires you to understand flop texture more than your opponent, while simultaneously not be holding the cards that are within the range he is attributing to you. So you give up core legit information in exchange for the same battle over flop texture that you had in the first place. Your strategy is self defeating. You are only playing yourself in a vacuum and forgetting there is poker to be played.

If you do that you ll end up playing close to GTO vs good player and gain max value vs weak ones.

In practice we should be looking for ways to maximize the EV of individual hands as we play them. But in oder to maximize your EV you have to understand how your current hand fits into some range, whether it is the range of hands you know you will take the same line with or the range of hands your believe your opponent will think you take the same line with.
