Calling With Overcards Calling With Overcards

I play in charity poker rooms where there are a lot of weak players, but there are also quite a few who read poker books and seem to be decent players, at least for that level (live tournaments from about $30 up to $75.)

Several players, who seemed to have an idea of how the math works, insisted that one should always call on the flop with two overcards. That doesn't make sense to me, since the odds against hitting are 6.83 to 1 and you're usually not getting odds anywhere near that.

Is this some kind of poker superstition, or am I missing something?

You could win addition money if you hit your hand and you could bluff on later streets which makes you effective odds better.

In this game you "always" do hardly anything... The only plays that should be made 100% of the time are obvious things like betting with the nuts on the river as the last person to act.

Those guys sound like they we're having you on lol, either that or they just suck. It's nonsense.

I don't know how you got those odds. A lot of the time good over cards have as much 30%+ equity. And agree with Heisenberg there are times you hit and get paid more money compensating for your incorrect immediate call.

On the turn, there are 6 outs for pairing one of the overcards in the remaining deck of 47 unknown cards, thus odds of a hit are 41/6 = 6.83 to 1. Of course, that doesn't include hits of flushes, straights and good draws.

Ah yes immediate odds vs equity. Was thinking there. Thanks.

These are not decent players.

Overcards can often be used for your weakest floats. You should rarely be calling with all 2-overs hands or your turn range will be very weak and hard to defend against double-barrels. You can be more selective by using hands with backdoor equity and/or showdown-value/raw equity so that you have more hands which can continue after picking up equity on the turn.

For example, you might float with QcJc or AQo on Tc6h6s, but not KQo or 22.

Against very weak players, I float with undercards.
