Hi Guys,

Not posted in here yet, but I am an MTT player. Nothing major, but a play a decent amount @ like $12 ABI.

Something that is hurting my game is c-betting. I started playing in 2012, and back then the strat was very much, raise pre & cbet. I feel like i cbet way too much. Any tips on when to cbet / when not to cbet? Of course, sometimes it is appropriate to pot control, take a free card, or take initiative etc. but some general pointers would be great?

Thanks

Edit: If this is in the wrong section, please move it

If you CBET and someone calls then you are narrowing and strengthening their range.
The size of the CBET will generally determine how strong the defending range is.

You want to have enough decent hands in your range so that you can defend against a check-raise and also check enough good hands so that you can defend against a Villains Turn lead.

With this in mind then just pick hands in your range that can preform all these tasks and be somewhat balanced. So bet reasonable made hands and semi-bluffs then check weak made hands some draws and the occasional slow-play. And I like to bet big 50%-100% of pot depending on the board. You can obviously do a different strategy like bettimg a big % of your range and bet a smaller size and many other things.

This is for cash games though, I don't have any experience with MTTs. But in general if I see someone cbetting 70%+ I am x/r'ing with a really high frequency and similarly if they bet things like weak made hands 2nd/3rd pair or worse then I am also x/r'ing a lot. If they don't bet then I am overbetting turn almost 100% of the time as their checking range is so weak. Think about what you can do to exploit your own strategy then adjust it so that it's not possible.

When you've missed, Cbet more when the flop is one high card and fairly dry, like K83r. Cbet less when the flop is two or more high cards and fairly wet, like KQTss.

And take player looseness into consideration, too. Don't worry about trying to find exact rules or hand charts. Just play around with those concepts.

The most important thing when it comes to C-betting in my opinion is to know who you are dealing with! You need to know your opponents range, tendencies and how aggressive he/she is. C-betting is a valuable tool, but if you are playing with ultra-aggressive fish, you will lose all your money quicker than you think!

I'd say c-betting A/K/Q-blank-blank type flops is almost always a good idea, especially if villain checks it to you. This should get rid of most small-med pocket pair and SCC hands.

It is very easy to forget how often people will call your preflop raise with hands like 44 or 67s. Not everyone is in there with a big ace or KQ, of course.

Beyond that, you want some balance...maybe aim for a c-betting frequency of 60% or so, but as with everything in poker, you have to be selective.

Keep in mind that c-betting can be useful for gaining information, not only taking it down. And there is no law stating that it has to be the same size...some people say you should always bet the same size, but I strongly disagree with that. If you bet an ace-high flop at 1/3 pot, it can look very strong....so why risk a full pot-size bluff? See what I mean?

It's quite funny actually due to how MTTs are structured. There are very few situations, where we shouldn't just cbet 100% IP vs BB in mtt, when antes are in play.

When antes aren't in play it changes a bit.

OOP vs BU/CO/MP etc it's totally different, and 0% is closer to correct than 100%.
