How do you guys adjust your default opening range when your 9 handed table currently only has 7 or 8 players?

I take out a "utg seat " if there is a player missing . So if there are only 7 players and I'm left of the BB then I play my default utg+2 opening range.

So I for a 7 handed table I would assume the table would seat: button, sb, bb, utg+2, lo jack, hi jack, cutoff.

How do you guys adjust your range during shorthanded play?

Your adjustments seem spot on to me.

But then when I play 6 handed my UTG is still narrower than my MP1 in 9 handed.

So maybe I should loosen up a bit!

The only concern I have here is in tourneys, where the blinds and antes may make it necessary to play some hands that I would otherwise fold if there were more free hands coming.

For all other situations, I just count how many places away from the button I am and I decide if my hand fits into a decent opening range from that position. So in a full stacked cashgame I don't care if I'm five spots off the button either in a 7 handed game or a 10 handed game; it's the same position.

+1. @OP you just have to adjust for limpers. If you are 5 off the button but happen to be UTG you could open the same range as 5 off the button sitting at MP1 and no limpers.

Opening is all about how many players behind you need to fold out.

Edit: Opening is all about how many players you need to fold out which is why you should adjust for limpers.

Yea counting back from the button is good idea. That's why I like using the names lojack and utg+2 instead of mp1 and mp2. Too vague. You could ask some people what seat back from the button mp1 is and you'll get a few different answers...

When I was memorizing standard ranges for limit holdem, I made flashcards with the hand on one side and the earliest position that I'd open that hand from on the other side. I found it cumbersome to write all the different positions almost immediately so instead I used this form:

button = 1
cutoff = 2
hijack = 3
next = 4

etc.

So now when I'm playing, I just look at the button and count the positions and I can instantly spit out my standard range from that spot and any potential exploits based on the tendencies of the players behind me.

Do we ever consider card removal effects when playing UTG in 6-max and just treating it as the same range as if we are 9-max and the first 3 guys to act have folded to us? Potentially, there's a higher chance that others behind might have very slightly better hands (in the 9-max spot) but is the overall effect of it so negligible it's not worth considering?

Correct. Negligible effect.

If there's a difference in profitability it's much more negligible than the rake. Any change in the proper opening range it's going to be a relatively small delta compared with other variables such as players tendencies and potential exploits.
