Sportsbetting Suit

Any new info on the sportsbetting suit the Corzine wants to join?? Dates etc??

I know the DOJ is trying to bar him from joining. Which is hilarious.

Re: Sportsbetting Suit

Judge Brown will rule next Monday (Aug. 3rd) on whether Gov. Corzine will be allowed to intervene in our suit.

Last week, the DOJ was granted an extension by the court to file their motion to dismiss the suit, and I believe that is due by the close of August. We'll then have the opportunity to supply the court with a rebuttal brief.

In the meantime, the leagues have filed against Delaware in US District Court to block that state - which was grandfathered in by the law - from offering sports betting this fall. Pretty much it's the same legal strategy they used over 30 years ago, which failed, so don't expect much love for the leagues from the court.

In the meantime, Sen. Jon Kyl and Sen. Orrin Hatch sent a letter to US attorney-general Eric Holder, urging him to keep an eye on Delaware, and to vigorously oppose our court challenge to the law. Sadly for the A-G, he used to represent the NFL, and is actually owed $2.5 million by the league in deferred compensation, so Mr. Holder will not be doing anything on this suit.

With so much thrashing and yelling already by the anti-wagering crowd and the game not yet begun, what do you think the other side thinks about our chances to topple this law?

I am not sure about chances, but I love it when States Rights conservatives start trying to interfere in another state. Orrin stay in Utah!

As a former Utahn I kind of wish he would have stayed in Pennsylvania where he was born.

Sorry, no, not yet. I've still not grown used to the pace of the Federal court system.

Re: Sportsbetting Suit

For the life of me I can't see what the alleged evils of sports betting have to do, whatsoever, with this case -- unless the NFL and Kyl and Hatch want the courts to make laws and become "activists judges". The only thing relevant is whether the law unfairly favors one or more states over the others. If it does, then it needs to be overturned, if not, then it should stand. But none of this hinges on the evils of sports betting.

If sports betting is so evil then ban it in all 50 states. I know its hard to pass laws in Congress, but that's how it's done. It's not suppose to be done through the courts. Remember Kyl and Hatch voted against Soto... because they claim, in part, she is an activist judge. What a bunch of hypocrites.

Two US Senators Oppose iMEGA Challenge to Sports Betting Law

July 24, 2009 - Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) and Sen. Jon Kyl (R-AZ) wrote a letter to US Attorney-General Eric Holder, asking him to vigorously oppose a suit challenging the Federal law banning the expansion of state licensed and regulated sports wagering, brought by the Interactive Media Entertainment & Gaming Association (iMEGA)...
I love the last paragraph:

Quote:
“The senators and the leagues can make their pronouncements about “integrity”, and then stick their heads in the sand,” Brennan said, “because that’s the only vantage point from which the current unregulated marketplace is preferable to a state-regulated sports wagering market.”

Of course, that's the kind of rhetoric that will probably get me audited by the IRS until they put me in a pine box.
