I've seen empty tables with wait lists of 4-10. They kick players off tables way too quickly. There's a flaw in the button positioning as well. Sometimes I end up with position even though I am the small blind. Players are trying to angle-shoot that glitch and leave (although I don't believe it's actually as exploitable as they might think, but they still try it nevertheless). The hierarchy of stakes, buy-in settings, and availability of games are all screwed up and uneven. Lack of a double-rebuy button is tilting, and sometimes makes me not ever want to play rebuy tourneys. The lobby filters are terrible. And worst of all, the client sucks up the most CPU memory I have ever seen of any site I've ever played on.
All these easily fixable issues basically make the experience of playing on Merge far less enjoyable for recreational players and grinders. Some of them are literally breaking up games and stunting the expansion of others.
I used to sit out all tables and take a bathroom break. By the time I get back, I'm kicked off all my tables, half of which completely empty out because god forbid a SH table temporarily has only 4-5 players.

obv they'll never be Stars, the current environment makes that impossible. But that doesn't mean they can't make simple and effective changes which improve the quality of the site dramatically.

This. So far, the only changes I'm aware of is a change in the tourney payout structures (which are still not great apparently) and the addition of tournaments here and there with guarantee changes.
One other thing to note is, while I greatly appreciate the promos since I have benefitted nicely from them, they stopped rake races two months ago (at least my affiliate RTR has).
